I’m so glad I took a chance on this author’s novel, both the writer and the story being unknown to me. I thought it great fun and liked the magic introduced in it. The main character is interesting and neither a spoiled brat as so many young characters are nor completely in control of her magic so it’s been a worthwhile journey accompanying her as she escapes her childhood home and reaches the academy where she richly deserves to be. I particularly liked her apologies to the tree she took refuge in, it makes a change to find a tough resourceful teen who has respect and gentleness as well as courage and ingenuity. Grateful thanks to the author Alex Linwood and to the excellent narrator Rafe Beckley. Now I can’t wait for the next instalment!
