About this listen

How far would you go to be free—to make your own choices without being subjected to punishment for doing what you felt was right? Could you kill for it?

After being abandoned by her father as a child, Aster spent ten years of her life as a servant for the leader’s House in the broken city of New Bethel. She’d known, even as a child, that the cities of her world were corrupt places with human monsters—assassins—running rampant between their high walls. Thinking everything will remain the same as it always has there, Aster is startled to discover that one day . . . the cycle breaks. As a young new leader takes a strange and—at times—horrifying interest in her, will she be capable of discovering the reasons behind his actions and orders?

In a world where nothing is as it seems and all things are never anywhere near as simple as they appear at first glance, will she be capable of making the distinction between what is real and what is not? Will she find anyone at all she can trust? More importantly . . .Does she have the strength to do what is necessary to survive in a world filled with evil?

Aster, our heroine, has spent the last ten years being treated as an object and subject to repeated punishments for showing some spirit of individuality. Rulers of the enclave where she works have changed several times as each is assinated. There is a caste of trained assassins who kill at the bidding of others. They are feared as their appearance usually ends in death for someone in the vicinity. A new ruler uses psychology rather than physical punishment and one of his techniques is to force Aster to care for the needs of a visiting assassin. The main part of the story is how she negotiates this relationship with the ruler, assassin and her own changes in body and self-perception. Along the way, she discovers more of her origins and relationships with other significant characters. We experience some of her disorientation and witness her unravelling some of the mysteries. She is altered by the end of the book, but I felt it took longer than needed to arrive at a cliff-hanger ending, which is why I have deducted a star.

I have seen other reviews criticising the narrator, one of which seems to have given up almost immediately. The beginning is rendered in a montonous manner, but this is good voice acting in conyeying the repression and boredom our heroine is experiencing at that time. I felt the voice acting also showed Aster's journey from immaturity to greater self-confidence. There are other instances of the voice acting conveying the emotions and attitude of the characters. One of the best examples is giving us a male voice delivering the speech whilst chuckling.

This story touched me intensely and I’m still reeling from the surprising twist at the end. I’m thinking that partly I could have figured it out but even though it hit me.

The story and world building are from an extremely high quality, the characters are very vivid, brave and intriguing. What’s also remarkable is the way the delicate and pure emotions are expressed. Several moments I was either touched, humored and shocked and it all felt so real.

The narrator has such enjoyable voice to listen at and did very well with changing to different vocal timbres when she was either reciting Aster, Chase, Arren, Agatha, Chandler, …

I can’t wait to start listening to part 2!

This is certainly a must read when you enjoy a touching fantasy story, with slow burn romance, friendship and perseverance!

Intense emotional and fantastic story!!!

Enjoyed the story, a great premise and I enjoyed learning about the world and characters within the book. Unfortunately the narrator was abysmal and ruined a lot of the story. Was struggling to get into the story at parts purely because of the narration style - rigid and robotic.

I enjoyed this book. The premise is good and the characters are fun, if a little shallow. The storyline is a bit intense and the performance is great

Do not listen to this- read it!
The narrator is AWFUL! I couldn't get past 2% without needing a break as her voice was just awfully irritating, really bland, monotone voice with no inflections or enthusiasm. She may as well have been reading a ransom note.
Seriously poor choice in voice actors.
which is sad because the story was actually very interesting. I just can't get over how bland the narrator was though, I had to out it to 1.75 speed just so there was some kind of connection to her voice. it was clear she was reading a script and she didnt like it.

As for the srory- it was great to read about something a bit different, the plot was unusual and interesting, the pacing was steady throughout and the twist at the end was enough to have me reaching for the next book! The characters were well developed and had a good history and depth to them, as did the side characters. very enjoyable. I just wish I read it- which is what I'll now do with the rest of the series.

NB: to any voice actors reading this- try to smile when the happy bits are happening, pinch yourself on the sad bits and pull up some memories to help with emotional scenes... just do the opposite of this and your audience will stick around.

Read it DONT listen to it
