Christopher Morris believes Lucy Letby has been the victim of a miscarriage of justice, and that her guilty verdict is not beyond reasonable doubt. He is not the only one. Ever since the nurse was condemned to fifteen life sentences, highly-regarded professionals in their fields have gone on record to raise concerns about the evidence used to convict her.
The science behind how her victims died, the reliance on circumstantial evidence, and the interpretation of the statistics used against Lucy Letby are all being questioned. Controversially, the defense did not call an expert witness to challenge the medical evidence presented by the prosecution. Nobody, except her lawyers, knows why.
In a quest to find out if he is correct, the author has interviewed scores of those experts. He has also pored over the thousands of documents submitted to the Thirlwall Inquiry, which is examining what went wrong at the Countess of Chester Hospital, as well as the transcripts of the trial. He has pulled this vast amount of information together into an engrossing journey through the uncertainties many feel undermine the conviction of Lucy Letby.
The answer matters for us all, as it raises serious questions about whether our justice system really does seek the truth.

How could someone like LL, who from all evidence was an excellent and conscientious nurse, wishing to do her job well, still have been put through such a process?
We see how under funded services and institutions, also without intelligent leadership; can come together to focus on one person as a ‘reason’ or ‘rationale’.
I found myself curious as to what it was about Lucy, maybe her diligence, that rubbed the consultants ‘up the wrong way’? I wondered if her exemplary nursing ability shone the light on their poor practice? We may never know. Surely this case must go back to the Court of appeal.
The outcome of this will have far reaching consequences for society and be referred to in our newspapers for decades to come.
As for Lucy I worry about her recovery. She will never be the person she was. No doubt those who support her will financially help her too and fight for compensation. Still, a truly dreadful crime has been committed to her and what a waste of her young and purposeful life.
I wonder how nurses feel about what has happened and how this impacts their professional confidence. I have anecdotally heard that NHS nurses in Brighton and Hove are expressing concern as to their safety to practice.

The author has interviewed scores of experts in every discipline involved in the investigation and trial, and forensically examined all the information which is available in the public domain. There are chapters describing clinical reviews and problem's at the County of Chester Hospital, the accusations, the investigation, the statistics, the diagnoses and the trial to name a few. They are presented logically and in a language which is easy to understand. There is also a comprehensive list with online links to the source material.
The narration was excellent, the author’s knowledge of the case was obvious, no mispronunciation of all the medical terms and read at a pace that you can understand all the information. It’s often said here “it would make a better read than a listen”, that’s not the case with this book. I managed to read almost half the book before the Audible version became available and I was happy to listen to the end so I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who thinks it may be a daunting listen.
After listening to this book you’ll be able to decide for yourself on the safety of the investigation and the safety of the conviction of Lucy Letby.
