Summary

A Black father. A white father. Two murdered sons. A quest for vengeance.

Ike Randolph has been out of jail for 15 years, with not so much as a speeding ticket since. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah's white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss.

Derek's father, Buddy Lee, was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed that his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though...and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-cons with little in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, band together in a desperate desire for retribution. In their quest to do better for their children in death than they did in life, they must confront their prejudices about their sons - and each other - as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt them.

A provocative revenge thriller and an achingly tender story of redemption, this novel is a ferocious portrait of grief, for those loved and lost and for mistakes than can never truly be undone.

A kick in the guts would be smoother than this

Racism and homophobia are the strong undercurrents to this utterly compelling narrative of two old men seeking vengeance for the death of their sons. The concern you get to feel for them as they put themselves in harms way is a tribute to the story-telling. The N word is freely applied and it certainly feels authentic. The narration for me was spot-on. A couple of weeks on and I was idly thinking that I had enjoyed the film! It was THAT vivid.

5 star all the way!

Loved this book from the very first paragraph. The story pulled me in straight away. The characters were really brought to life & scenes described so vividly, it was as if you were watching a movie. Gripped from start to finish. The narration was just excellent.

Another absolute triumph

Fantastic story narrated perfectly! Emotional depth and characters you can’t help but hold your heart in your hand for and pray it’ll all work out!
I’m hoping the next book won’t be too long in coming.

Wafer thin plot, unrealistic. Disappointed.

Started well enough but then became tedious, unless you like nonsensical action movies. Excellent performance from the narrator however, if it wasn’t for him I don’t think I’d have finished it. Looking forward to a new listen now.

Did not enjoy this as much as Blacktop Wasteland but still a good read. Intense. Adam Lazarre-White's narration is pitch perfect.
