Daniel has made it easy to understand, for someone with no homesteading experience! I watch homesteading shows on the Discovery channel and have subscribed to Mother Earth News since 1972. I have always wanted to have my own place where I could raise crops and animals and be self-sufficient. Unfortunately, life got in the way, but as I am retired now, I keep thinking more and more about doing this. One of my sons is currently looking for a piece of land so he can do the same. Maybe I will join him. Learning about how to raise the animals that can supply eggs, milk, and meat is one of the first requirements of being "off the grid" and I applaud this book for its insights. Anyone that is thinking about this type of lifestyle should definitely get a copy of this book and take it to heart.

I was only interested in learning something about raising backyard chickens and then I saw this two-book purchase that also included goats. My close friend is always bragging about her fresh eggs from her backyard chickens, so I wanted to see how much would be involved in raising chickens myself. But after listening to both books, I have to say the author has piqued my interest in goats too. As a novice that knows nothing about raising farm animals, I thoroughly enjoyed this very comprehensive guide. It answered all my questions and when I’m ready to move forward, I feel equipped thanks to Daniel Hart. Well done. Highly recommend.

I loved this book so much, yes it is a great guide on how to raise chickens and goats but more than that it gives you the feeling of being on the farm and being at one with nature. I have become addicted to homesteading, bottling, and all things that take you towards a simpler more self-sufficient life and this book is part of that journey. You don't need a lot of space to keep these animals and so it is suitable for people who have a reasonably sized yard.
The author clearly knows what they are talking about and goes into the emotional as well as the how-to aspects of keeping animals. This book is a great step toward self-sufficiency
