Summary

After finding herself the subject of a powerful psychic attack in the 1930s, famed British occultist Dion Fortune wrote this detailed instruction manual on protecting oneself from paranormal attack. This classic psychic self-defense guide explains how to understand the signs of a psychic attack, vampirism, hauntings, and methods of defense.

Everything you need to know about the methods, motives, and physical aspects of a psychic attack and how to overcome it is here, along with a look at the role psychic elements play in mental illness and how to recognize them.

This is one of the best guides to detection and defense against psychic attack from one of the leading occult writers of the 20th century.

Poor narration

Sounds like it is being read by Perd from Parks and Rec. Not a good choice for a Dion Fortune book.

Great book, poorly read

A classic of occult literature, for good reason. However, the reader mispronounced and mangled a great many words, both in the technical vernacular of occultism and in standard English.

Poor pronunciation by narrator, Not very helpful

This book has some nice personal stories but I spent 6 hours listening to her stories, and I was seriously about to just send the book back, but the last hour had some very vague ways to actually defend yourself. The narrator poorly annunciated so many words I was kind of disgusted, otherwise he did ok reading. I am just delving into this genre myself, but my husband tells me it's "hard to write occult things because you're not supposed to give the secrets out willy nilly" Well I guess that may be true but I won't be reading more old school occult stuff because it's the most verbose shit I've ever spent (wasted) time on. Also, I don't think this book had a real editor. I wanted to jump out a window after she wrote and embellished words like hithertofore every two sentences. I'll give Dion a pat on the back for leading an extra interesting life. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Great book, bad narrator

I love Dion Fortune's writing but this narrator was very distracting. Mispronunciations combined with a simply annoying vocal timbre made me very hesitant to finish. But, if you can get through the first hour it's a great listen.

Excellent work, with one caveat...

I was glad to see this excellent and foundational work released on audiobook, but there is one issue to which I must take exception — and that is the reason for taking it down to 4 stars. The editor has removed all references to Christianity from the audiobook. Personally, I am speaking as a pagan who left the Church and have no use whatsoever for Christian orthodoxy. I also have no desire to become a Christian heretic. I truly have little to no sympathies towards this faith. But that said, to edit those parts of the book out is to obfuscate the meaning and original intent of a work first published in 1930. There are also things that can be learned from her through the viewpoints (including her criticisms), and entire formula were removed without replacement. It is still a foundational work, but I would recommend this audiobook in tandem with the unabridged text.

Excellent

I really enjoyed this book. Learned a few things and got validation for some others. Chapter 11onwards for me was particularly fruitful.

Attractive

Listening to the words from Dion was quite stimulating. She is quite wise and self assured. Just alone by how well she articulates herself, you find the information able to sink in easier. I believe this book is a must reed for any practice that involves energy work.
