About this listen

Love changes you. So do the Outer Gods.

Now: Alone in a cottage, Lavinia writes to the woman she loved.

Fifteen years ago: Middle-aged Lavinia Whateley escapes her hilly Massachusetts town when the townsfolk decide to sacrifice her on Halloween. After almost dying in the woods, she's saved and housed by the stoic and mysterious Asenath Waite, or Azzie. On the coastal outskirts of East Providence, they start to fall in love.

However, things change when Azzie, with her secret past and the strange "scars" on the side of her neck, begins to transform into an eldritch creature of the deep.

A story inspired by the "doomed" women in H. P. Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep" and "The Dunwich Horror."

Contains mature themes.

I loved this even though there are some harrowing scenes and the content warnings need to be reviewed before reading/listening. This is the first novel I have read/listened to by Morgan Dante and it also served as my introduction to the writing of H. P. Lovecraft too. Reading and listening to the audiobook at the same time made it a really immersive experience. I was right there in East Providence with Lavinia (Vin) and Azzie. Both narrators were excellent and really helped bring these two wonderfully rendered characters to life for me. I am in awe of the creative abilities of Morgan Dante and all I want now is to feed my desire for more words from this writer and also from Lovecraft himself.

This is a delightful beautiful written story that is an emotional journey of surviving abuse and becoming more!
Finding love in differences and accepting the transformations that the curse brings. They are freaks of society and they struggle to survive and to forget, and accepting the new. Life is hard for them both, they find different ways to cope, but love bond's them.
Excellent narration that is a pure joy to listen to. 🎶
