About this listen

Promised Land is part of my James Dean sequence of stories, which includes the recently published novel The Rebel: An Imagined Life of James Dean.

My intent was to explore the great icons of the 50’s and 60’s. Major iconic characters in the novel (besides James Dean) and short stories include Robert F. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Jack Kerouac, Marilyn Monroe and, in this story, President Lyndon Johnson.

The dreams depicted in Promised Land, incidentally, are real.

Editor reviews

Like his earlier novel Rebel, which imagines James Dean hadn’t died in a car crash in 1955, this collection of stories takes characters based on real life versions of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, the Kennedys, Elvis, and many of their contemporaries and puts them in a fictional alternate history. Dann draws from and comments on the counterculture, liberation movements, and politics of the past with fun and imagination. Christopher Kipiniak’s impersonations liven up this audiobook and his steady narration keeps the action flowing. If you’re a fan of the pop culture icons of the '50s and ever wonder what they might’ve really been like and what if history had unfolded differently you’ll find this audio fun and fascinating.
