Heinrich Mann gelingt mit der Geschichte um den Gymnasialprofessor eine meisterhafte Karikatur der Wilhelminischen Zeit. Die frühe Spießer-Satire ist einer der ersten Lehrer- und Campusromane und geht Meisterwerken wie Nabokovs "Lolita" oder Philip Roths "Der menschliche Makel" voraus.
