Summary

Ryan isn’t looking for a relationship with a guy - and Johnny isn’t looking for a relationship at all.

Ryan’s always been attracted to tall, leggy blondes - normally of the female variety. When Johnny catches his eye at a party, Ryan’s interest is piqued even though he’s never been with a guy before. The attraction is mutual, and the amazing night that follows opens Ryan’s eyes to his bisexuality.

Experience has taught Johnny that love hurts. Staying single is safer, and there’s no need for complicated relationships when hooking up is easy. When he moves in next door to Ryan, they’re both interested in picking up where they left off, and it seems like an ideal arrangement: Convenient, mutually satisfying, and with no strings attached.

Despite their best intentions to keep things casual, they develop an emotional connection alongside the physical one. Both begin to want more from the relationship but are afraid to admit it. If they’re going to work things out, they need to start being honest - first with themselves, and then with each other.

Although this audiobook is part of the Housemates series, it has new main characters, a satisfying happy ending, and can be listened to as a standalone.

Steamy read

Yikes, this book was full of heat 🔥 But at the same time I also loved the story and how both they both had insecurities. They started off as a one night stand and decide to continue to see each with no strings attached and slowly starts to develop feelings for each other but they both struggle with their issues and whether they are strong enough to get over it. Again Hamish Long has done an amazing job with getting the characters vulnerability, emotions and personalities across. Really enjoyed listening to this story 💜

Great story

I really enjoyed this sexual awakening story! The characters were really deep and full of emotion. I liked how unique each character was, even the side characters. The story was fun, emotional, spicy and well written. The narration was good. I liked that the narrator had an English accent, it fit the story well. I didn’t find enough difference between characters at times though, and found it hard to discern whose inner voice I was listening to at times.

Really enjoyed

one thing that really keeps my interest is characters that are not absolutely perfect. They're human, they make mistakes and I find these characters more relatable. The narrator adds to the depth of the story, his voice is clear and easy to listen to. The Housemates series is highly recommended.

Great addition to the series

This is another excellent addition to this series. Ryan's journey of sexual discovery is well handled with all the denial and confusion you would expect from a 20/21 year old's bisexual awakening. But of the two Johnny is the one more wary to take steps towards a relationship. There is denial and a typical 20 somethings lack of communication.
An excellent job by Hamish Long bringing the characters to life and keeping all those former couples and current housemates in check.

Hot read!

4 Stars!

Ryan is straight or so he thinks until he's attracted to Johnny. Johnny is all for experimenting with Ryan and what was supposed to be a one-night-stand, quickly turns into a no-strings-attached arrangement. Only Ryan starts wanting more and Johnny is still set in not having a relationship, or is he?

So, while I liked Ryan and Johnny individually, there were so many times in which I would've wanted to shake some sense into them or knock their heads together, whatever worked best, LOL. It was obvious they had chemistry and that things were changing between them, but they didn't talk much, so that, of course, led to some miscommunication.

The audiobook was good, Hamish Long has a great voice and is really good in scenes where several characters interact, making it easy for the listener to differentiate between them.

Overall, I think I wanted a bit more balance between the sex scenes and having them together in other settings. Still, it was an engaging listen and I enjoyed it, so I have no trouble recommending it.

A lovely addition to the series

Another fabulous story from Jay and superbly narrated by Hamish Long.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading and listening to each of the books in the Housemates series and love the variety of characters that Jay created. His stories always give me the warm fuzzy feels that I crave from M/M romances and this story worked well for me. It was also great to catch glimpses of the other couples in the student houses and see they're still happy and together.

Ryan and Johnny were introduced in the previous book with hints that there was something going on between them, and there’s a sort of recap of their first meeting at the beginning of this story. Ryan explores his bi-curious side by hooking up with Johnny, the gorgeous, leggy, eyeliner-wearing, androgynous blond.

They continue with no-strings hookups once they become neighbours. It’s all about the sex and the moment, so they don’t spend much time talking or really getting to know each other well. We are treated to some super hot scenes—some a little kinky—each time they meet up.

Ryan is still coming to terms with his bisexuality and Johnny is reluctant to risk his heart again after being hurt in the past. They are sexually compatible and their arrangement is convenient for them—except feelings do develop on both sides. It takes time for them to truly admit it to themselves and neither are in a position to tell the other as these feelings grow. Wrongly assuming the other doesn’t want anything more than sex, they are reluctant to be the one to talk about this. Yes, it causes problems and some lovely angst in the story because of their lack of communication, but that happens in real life. Many people keep their thoughts to themselves and just go along with the status quo. I loved the tinge of jealousy Ryan exhibited when he saw Johnny with another guy. I didn’t take it as cheating because they weren’t in an agreed relationship at that point.

The resolution is great and the epilogue gives a lovely happy ending for the couple. I was left wanting more ‘boyfriend’ time and to see them getting to know each other more. I was also hoping for more 'pink’ episodes after the earlier deliciously steamy one.

A highly recommended story. It’s well written, quick-paced, super hot, and with a little angst. Spot-on voices, emotions and pacing from the narrator making it even more enjoyable.

Great

Johnny and Ryan’s story was absolutely perfect! The casual hook-up/fwb to lovers and emotional entanglement is always fun to read, but Johnny & Ryan were perfect. The development of their relationship is something you couldn’t help but root for in the beginning!
Hamish Long is a new to me narrator but I’m positive it won’t be my last by him! He did a truly outstanding job bringing these men and their story to life! Great Listen!

Unexpected love

Ryan and Johnny are attractred to each other from the get go, but neither of them are looking for more than a hook up at first. One hookup leads to more and they find themselves having a regular sexual thing. I loved how Ryan embraces his bisexuality, even though Johnny is his first male lover Ryan isn't freaked out in any way by his attraction to Johnny, the reason why Ryan is hesitant to committing to Johnny isn't really the "gay thing", it's more the "realtionship thing". Johnny is just as hesitant as Ryan to committ, so they more of less are on the same page and their feelings grow more or less at the same pace.

This book is part of the Housemates series but it's not neessary to have read the other books to enjoy this one. I haven't, but i really loved this one so I will get the other books in this series and am looking forward to listening to them too.

Hamish Long is quickly becoming my new favorite narrator, his voice is so wonderful and I love listing to him.

Phenomenal

Holy hell I loved this audio book. Hamish did both voices perfectly! I was amazed and impressed. I also fell apart over the story and had to listen in one day.

It kind of surprised me, to be honest, because I don't like mm books with women's underwear, I don't like Gay For You, and I don't like communication issues. That being said, I love Jay Northcote, so I just HAD to listen to this book and I couldn't be happier that I did. This is one to come back to and re-listen to over and over. Such a sweet, honest, hot story.

Plenty of heat

I've always loved the Housemates series but I have to admit that the first two are my absolute favourites. So I don't really know if it's down to my age or not but...I find both main characters to be quite immature. Although there is plenty of heat in bed and it's great to read of bi-awakening, they don't communicate well, they are almost dishonest with each other and I really don't see them as long term. On the positive side, I love this author's writing style and the uncompromising Britishness of his books.

The narration by Hamish Long is as excellent always. He picks up the youthfulness of the housemates and brings them to life.

I was so excited when I realized that this was Johnny's story. I was very curious about him in the last book and felt a little bad that he had to move out of his place because he was feeling like a third wheel.
I really enjoyed the way the author handled this situation with a man who didn't even know he was bi-sexual until he met Johnny's and the attraction was instant. I loved how once he acknowledged he was Bi, he was all in and I loved how patient Johnny was with him and letting him figure it out on his own with no pressure. My favorite was the ending, I love when everyone is happy in the end <3 Jay Northcote really knows how to write about real life and love.

Hamish long was amazing as always. I am so happy to see him on more and more audiobooks.

Sooo Good!!!!

WOW!! I loved Johnny and Ryan! Neither of them are looking for a relationship. Johnny has been hurt in the past and Ryan always believed he was straight. When they meet at a party, Ryan is attracted to Johnny, realizing he's bi-curious. Johnny agrees to be Ryan's experiment. They decide to experiment some more and pretty soon it becomes more. I loved this story so much!! Hamish Long did an excellent job with the narration!!

A little love, a lot of steam

I really enjoyed this book! I read some of the other Housemates books a while ago but this was my first listen to one. Honestly, I struggled a little with the monotone sound of Ryan's voice but was able to move past it and enjoy the story. Johnny is a little firecracker and I love how he was able to let his guard down with Ryan after fighting it for so long. For Ryan, he was so open with his discovery and didn't shy away from it or have a "straight guy" freak out. Jay's stories are always so real and authentic. And hot! So very hot! I'm now moved to go back and read the stories I've missed. Nicely done!!

5 star overall (rounded up)!

Rating 4.5

I'm such a fan of Jay Northcote's writing! Every now & then one of his stories will miss the mark for me, and I can admit that I went into this one thinking it would fall into that category. But, I ended up really enjoying this one. I meant here were aspects in this story that normally a big no's for me - lacy undies and open relationships probably being the biggest two. And yet the author was able to work both into the story in such a way that I ended up being ok with it and they both served the overall story well.

I was worried part of the way in, thinking that they didn't spend enough time with each (outside of sex) to warrant the kind of feelings they were starting to have (according to their inner dialogues), but even that issue seemed to fall away based on Jay's writing.

Kudos for making me like a story that based on description alone I shouldn't have!

Add in some yummy narration by Hamish Long and this listener is happy!

"Pretty In Pink" is the sixth book...

in Jay Nortcote's 'Housemates' series and while I've enjoyed the first four books on audio I have to confess I did miss out on the 5th book so I can honestly say these books can readily be enjoyed as standalone stories. While characters from previous stories do appear in the story they're here as a part of this story and there's no real overlap in terms of plot from the previous stories in this series. Which is not to say that I won't be going back to catch book #5 when I have a chance...it's just that I was able to enjoy this one without feeling like there were gaps in the story that I'd missed out on.

Ryan's not looking for a relationship with a guy and Johnny's just not looking for a relationship...he's a one and done kinda' guy. He learned the hard way that sometimes...love hurts and he's just not into that kind of pain.

But neither of them is adverse to a bit of fun on the side. It's just that Ryan's not gay...he likes his blonds...tall,slim, leggy and female...but hey, 3 out of 4 ain't bad, right?

For me this one was just ok, I liked that characters from previous stories were around giving the story a level of familiarity and comfort that I enjoy in a series.

For reasons of their own both Ryan and Johnny are reluctant to have a relationship that's anything more than hooking up. But with each hook-up both men find themselves becoming increasingly attracted and attached to the other. Unfortunately good communication is not a strong point for either of these men and misunderstandings easily become their biggest obstacle.

For me the bigger issue for Ryan and Johnny came from Ryan's behavior. I get that Ryan was suddenly faced with the realization that he could be bisexual and yes, that can be a big deal for someone but not at the price of making someone else your dirty little secret...sorry but just no, that doesn't work for me. Granted Ryan did get a bit of redemption later in the book but still there were definitely moments when I was uncomfortable with how Ryan was treating Johnny...so I can only imagine how Johnny must have felt.

As far as Johnny's behavior goes I think each reader has to decide for themselves how they felt about it and for me...it wasn't an issue but in the interest of remaining spoiler free the only thing I can say is read/listen to the story and make your own informed decision.

Hamish Long provided the narration for this audio book and once again he's done a super job and added depth and emotion to the characters voices. "Pretty In Pink" is the eighth audio book that I've enjoyed that's narrated by Hamish and he's consistently given me stories that I not only enjoy but enjoy enough to know that I'll happily listen to again in future.

While "Pretty In Pink" wasn't the best in this series so far, it was definitely a solid and welcome addition to the series and I've enjoyed revisiting Jay Northcote's 'Housemates'.

Very enjoyable book

I have really enjoyed this series and this group of guys and I can add Ryan and Johnny to the list of guys I've fallen for in this group! They definitely don't seem like a likely pair but I liked these guys and I liked them together. Listening to the audio book, I really think Hamish Long adds a lot to this story, bringing these characters to life! I liked the way he captured their personalities and always knew which character was speaking. I definitely enjoy his narration!

Ryan has always identified as straight, although he admits being attracted to guys sometimes. Then he meet Johnny, with his long blond hair and androgynous look and he can't resist. Johnny is all game for hooking up, but no commitments and when he meets Ryan and it leads to an awesome hook-up he thinks he's got a perfect no-strings go-to. The two pursue a physical relationship together and it seems like what both men want, sex with no expectations.

I really liked these two together, they obviously had great chemistry but I feel like I would have liked more of their story outside the bedroom. There is a lot of sex with these two and it's hot but I felt like I wanted a bit more from them, I wanted to get to know them a little better. I absolutely loved the way this story came together though, it was great! These two both finally learn about who they really are and who they are supposed to be, together. Overall, I did enjoy Ryan and Johnny and totally fell for them and their story.

Friends w/benefits, Bi awakening, femme mc

Do friends with benefits/NSA sex ever work out the way we plan? It’s a good thought, with mutual benefits, but unpredictable outcomes. This is what Ryan and Johnny were about to find out.

After meeting at a party, and hooking up, Johnny and Ryan went separate ways shortly after. It was going to be a one-off, until it wasn’t. Thus beginning their journey of mutually satisfying hookups. Surprise! It doesn’t go as planned. Can they ever get on the same page?

This is book 6 of the series, but can be listened to as a stand-alone. You will not be confused or lost, but you will meet characters that are most likely in previous books. This story was well written, and all of the characters are likable. I enjoyed it.

As always, Hamish Long does a fantastic job with the multiple characters. I could tell who was talking. This makes four books that I’ve listened to, that was narrated by him. His narrations are consistent and highly enjoyable to listen too. His voice is very pleasing to the ears. The accent is nice, too; not gonna lie! Highly recommend listening to his work. Four books in, and I’m still convinced that Jay Northcote and Hamish Long make a great audiobook team!

Compelling Story with Fabulous Narration

I'd been aware of author Jay Northcote's "Housemates" series for some time but hadn't delved in until this audio book. Having listened to "Pretty in Pink" twice now before reviewing, I'm kicking myself for letting the series sit on my TBR shelf for so long. I really enjoyed this audio book - from the bisexual awakening storyline and endearing MCs to the fabulous narration. This isn't a sugary sweet story nor an angsty one; rather, it was a compelling journey of two realistic young adults who are working through self-discovery and personal hangups toward creating a meaningful, loving relationship.

"Pretty in Pink" can be fully enjoyed as a standalone, and if anything it'll likely entice listeners to go back and experience the previous books in the series. Narrator Hamish Long is excellent, with a refreshingly youthful voice and variety of distinguishable British accents for the numerous college-aged characters. It'll be a treat working back through the series in audio to catch up on the MCs who were supporting characters in this book.

I received an ARC of this audio book and have left this honest review voluntarily.
