Story
In the dark woods of Olive Park, in the hills above Sacramento, a California Highway Patrol officer stumbles over a gnarled branch. But it isn’t a branch. It is an arm. Reaching up from a shallow grave. And clutched in the small, desperate hand is a single quarter. So begins one of the most exhaustive investigations in California history. Yet even with their massive resources, State and Federal authorities fail to find any trace of the killer. After two long years, the case goes cold.
Summary
Then
Fifteen years ago, an unidentified killer terrorised Northern Georgia, killing hikers with two shots from a pistol before disposing of the bodies along the remote trails and in the rivers in the vicinity of Blood Mountain. The killer was never brought to justice.
Now
Carter Blake has returned home for the first time in many years. The visit stirs old memories, including a girl from school who vanished without a trace. Blake runs into the mother of the girl, who mentions a case she's come across in Georgia, where someone is convinced their relative is still alive, 15 years on. Adeline Connor was the Blood Mountain Killer's last suspected victim. She vanished without a trace. So why is her brother so convinced she's still alive?

Top notch crime thriller.
Mason Cross and Carter Blake are definitely at the top of my 'must-read and must-listen when I can't read' list! The experience was definitely enhanced by the excellent narration of Eric Meyers and I find that is often not the case. So highly recommended on all counts.

One of my FAVORITE series...
Mason Cross's Carter Blake series is one of my favorites. His books don't get any where near the attention they deserve. I didn't even know this had been published until I looked him up to see if he had anything in the wings yet to be released. Glad I looked!
Anyway, as with the previous books this one is fantastic and the narration by Eric Meyers is first class as well.
When Carter Blake goes to the town he lived for a while as a child, it's for the funeral of his foster mother. He didn't expect to run into an old acquaintance. She's in the business of helping to find missing people but she's no where near the skill level Blake is. She asks for help on a case of a woman (Adeline) whose been presumed dead for 15 years. Fifteen years ago there was a serial killer in the mountains of this isolated town. Her brother swears he saw her from a bus only weeks earlier, so he hires a private investigator. That man turns up murdered. The PI's witness is also murdered. Then people around town who might have information for Blake start being picked off.
There are so many suspects and the evidence points from one to the next. I thought I had it, then I thought I had it again but I was wrong again! That almost never happens to me!!
This book is so cleverly written. Blake is a very proficient and resourceful investigator and the story and his character kept me listening. And the ending... WOW!! Completely unexpected...
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!!

Incredible plot twist at the end!
PRESUMED DEAD, Book 5 in the Carter Blake series by Mason Cross, is an easy 5 star crime suspense mystery/thriller. Author Mason Cross deserves much more attention. All 5 novels in the Carter Blake series are outstanding. This novel is a serial killer mystery covering 15 years set in northwest Georgia. The identification of the killer revealed at the end of the novel is a shocking surprise. Eric Meyers narrates this series superbly.
As I write this is see the average rating of Presumed Dead is 4.2 stars. The novel is actually much, much better than 4.2 stars.

Solid suspence, well narrated.
I would more likely give the story a 3 1/2 * rating, because, while being entertaining and listenable, it is not all that memorable if you read/listen to a lot in the suspense genre. Nonetheless, the narrator does a good job; it contains a couple of interesting characters, and sufficient twists via cliff hanging chapter endings and red herrings, and it fundamentally sticks the landing.

a slower, smaller scene story
Carter Blake moves on past the Winterfell and super secret to a more local, slower paced (and less globally-implicated) story in a small town in Georgia that starts slow, but the end is a fantastic twist and honestly one of the most surprising of the series. there seem to be fewer important characters, so you're automatically more suspicious of everyone introduced.
