Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized, and martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned. The inland towns and cities of the United Kingdom were to be evacuated to defensive enclaves being built around the coast and the Scottish Highlands and in the Irish Republic. For George Tull and the other residents of the Waverly-Price Retirement Home, walking to the coast is not an option.

Difficult narration
Overall I liked the story. It was typical of the genre, but decent characters and an actual enemy on US soil was a different take than the usual. However, the narration. It seems the author likes to use Ramona Master regularly. He may want to rethink this. First, it’s a male lead character and majority male cast of characters. She struggles with male voices. Anybody over the age of 40 sounds like they are 90 and decrepit. Then there’s the narration itself. Stilted with inappropriate emphasis and inflection. For example, a simple, normal, mundane action, such as standing up is said like it was the most astounding thing to ever happen “and he STOOD UP!” There are odd pauses and the sentence structure is just tortured. It made it extremely difficult to listen to.

Barely tolerable
The narrators need to go back to acting school or at least take the time to listen to the way real people speak. Their speech is not realistic. The book would have been better with different narrators, preferably a male as the main character is male.

completely unrealistic
suffered through the first book and into some of the second hoping it would get better. I'm now asking for a refund. things happen so fast it's hard to keep track of the timeline. within 30 minutes after the power goes out from an EMP attack, people are already looting, murdering, and raping like they already knew it was the end of the world. hords of masked terrorist constantly pop up out of nowhere just roaming aimlessly around killing people. not to mention the narrator reads everything like she's balanced on the edge of her seat the whole time.

Not a prepper novel, more a shoot 'em up, boring
One gun battle after another. I thought with one of the main characters being an orchard owner, there might actually be some useful information and real life farming experience. There were a lot of people who got into trouble with debt, so although it was not specifically spelled out, that was a good bit of advice...do not incur debt.
Otherwise it was implied get guns, ammo, and not just pistols and hunting rifles, get AK47's and grenades. The only people you will actually be killing if you follow this advice is your family, friends, and neighbors...or strangers at the mall, your workmates or schoolmates if you are unhinged.
The situation seemed unrealistic...North Koreans invading the USA.
I bought this book because the length seemed like a real bargain; I am stopping listening after only 5 hours because I did not see it getting any better. Sigh.
I am not returning this book for credit, because I want to warn others and remind myself this was a dud.
Not much cursing, no sex, just lots of killing. Yuck.

Poor story
I don’t usually like to criticize books but the first series in this set it poorly written and needs allot of work, the story is ok but there is to many scenarios that are unbelievable.
For instance they are hearing a plane right after a bomb going off?? Really. I am a veteran and have been in fire fights and around bombs and mortars, I just found that hardly any of the scenarios were actually believable. There is allot of inconsistency’s and changes that would have made the story a great book, but it’s not.

Sorry guys. Maybe I’m just accustomed to more violent apocalyptic books or better prepared people. But I finally had to throw this to the curb. From North Koreans only a few miles up the road and still no ones making a plan to the budding romances everywhere and sunrise burials and waxing eloquent about the landscape...I was done.

Poor Narration and Lacking Firearms Knowledge
The narrator needs to attend voice acting classes and learn the meaning of punctuation.
The writer, continually swaps between a revolver and pistol while the main character, Charlie is in possession of it. Also, during the first interaction between Charlie and a military squad, he says that they shoved an AR15 in his face...The U.S. Military has never used the civilian AR15 rifle, which is semi-automatic! The U.S. Military uses M16's or M4's that are selective fire, fully automatic rifles! I know that this maybe nitpicking in regards to the firearms in the story, but ignorance of firearms and in their use, continues to mislead people, giving them the wrong and possibly dangerous information! The writer also makes the military personal look like rookies without combat training. In future stories that involve firearms and/or the military, or law enforcement, I highly recommend getting input from people who have had actual experience in that field. The flaws in this story could've been prevented by a good editor or by allowing experts to proofread prior to release? If you have a background in the military/law enforcement, prepping, or firearms? You will probably be disappointed.
