Possibility is one of those books where I can recognise just how much it does well while also admitting that I didn't completely connect with it.
At the centre of the story is Anika, and I really appreciated how much space Domingo gives her to be messy. She makes mistakes, questions herself, fights against her fears and doesn't always behave in ways that make her particularly easy to root for. Her journey isn't simply about finding romantic love; it's equally about figuring out who she is when the life she thought she understood begins shifting beneath her.
Her health journey, in particular, was one of the strongest and most relatable aspects of the story for me. There are some incredibly grounded reflections on illness, body image and what happens when suddenly you can't take your own body - or your future - for granted.
Where Anika lost me slightly was in her growing reliance on manifestation and affirmations. As someone who tends to approach things from a more grounded perspective, I found some of her choices increasingly frustrating, particularly when her determination to transform her life began affecting the very real people and relationships already within it.
I think that frustration is partly intentional. Possibility seems interested in the tension between believing we can create the life we want and accepting that some things simply aren't within our control. Anika's journey is chaotic because she's desperately trying to impose order and meaning on circumstances that refuse to cooperate.
But understanding that didn't always make her easier for me to connect with.
Thankfully, I really enjoyed Cam. He's such a lovely counterpoint to Anika, and their romance develops with a believable slow burn rather than feeling like something the story simply expects us to accept. His affection for her is evident long before everything is straightforward between them, and watching his confusion and hurt as Anika struggles with everything happening around her was genuinely painful. Their chemistry felt natural, and even the spicier moments never seemed shoehorned in simply because this is technically a romance.
Music also runs beautifully through their relationship and the wider story. As such an important part of Anika's world, it gives the book an additional emotional language and was something I connected with immediately.
But I actually think the relationships beyond the romance are where this book shines brightest. Domingo creates such a warm, believable Black and West African community around Anika. I particularly loved the female friendships - complicated, occasionally messy and sometimes strained, but filled with genuine history and affection. The supporting characters feel like people with lives rather than props surrounding the protagonist, which gives the story so much heart.
And there is A LOT happening here: illness, grief, romantic love, family breakdown, friendship, body image, identity and self-discovery. It would be easy for a book carrying this many themes to feel disjointed, but Domingo manages to weave them together remarkably well. Her writing has an intimate, conversational quality that makes it feel as though Anika is simply sitting beside you and telling you about her life.
My biggest struggle was the pacing. Somewhere around the 60-70% mark, I felt the story plateau, and it began to feel longer than it needed to be. After spending so much time on such an emotionally chaotic journey, I also wanted a little more from the ending. The emotional payoff didn't quite match the amount of time I'd invested getting there.
I wanted more certainty. More concrete answers. Something that made the chaos feel fully resolved. But perhaps that's also part of the point.
You can manifest, plan, journal and desperately try to force your life into the shape you want, but ultimately life doesn't promise us certainty. Sometimes growth means learning to live with the possibilities rather than knowing exactly how everything will turn out.
I can appreciate that message while also admitting that, as a reader, I still wanted just a little more 😂
🎧 A note on the audiobook: I listened to Possibility on audio, and Isabel Adomakoh-Young did a fantastic job with the narration. She brought Anika to life with so much personality and emotion, while also giving the supporting characters their own distinct voices and energy. With such an emotionally layered story, her performance really helped capture all of Anika's messiness, vulnerability and humour, and made the whole cast feel wonderfully alive.
⭐ 3.5/5 - messy, thoughtful and deeply human, with a lovely slow-burn romance, beautiful female friendships and an ambitious exploration of illness, grief, love and the limits of how much control we really have over our lives.
