Summary

A fun and excellent way to learn Portuguese.

It is generally said that there is nothing better when it comes to learning a language than to live in it, to surround yourself with it, to throw yourself into that adventure, and just try your best to deliver your message, to find your voice, and understand others.

That is exactly what Portuguese Short Stories for Beginners tries to do. The approach that is adopted is not an intensive-listening type of textbook - with customized sentences, constructed to teach bits of the language’s rules and structure. It is, instead, an extensive-listening type of audiobook that presents the listener with nine short stories that, although not long enough to become boring or dull, have the sufficient length to engage and captivate the listener, whilst displaying fluent and natural Portuguese dialogue. In fact, it has long been regarded as one of the best methods to teach a foreign language.

In addition, this audiobook changed several structured aspects that these kinds of audiobooks tend to follow. The listener is confronted with rich and new - but not too complex - vocabulary, which is translated at the end of the chapter, avoiding the hassle of having to stop the listening rhythm to look up every word in the dictionary. Every paragraph is translated, as well as the summary of the story, thus providing a clearer comprehension of each sentence, while trying to prevent the temptation the listener might have, if discouraged, of giving up and listening to the whole story in English.

After each chapter, there is a question section, which aims to test the listener's overall understanding of the story, containing both open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The solved questions are provided at the end, enabling you to check your own answers and, consequently, develop your skills.

Good idea. English bits hard to listen to though.

I like the idea of the parallel stories. I've listened to them over and over again in the car. Lots of useful Portuguese in there. The narrator is hard to listen to though when he talks English. He lacks emotion and the changes of pitch make it difficult to maintain concentration. His portuguese sounds fine!
Worth it for the stuff learnt.

Enjoyable and helpful stories

Have used this for an adult beginner’s class level and to read with my six year old. Certainly not for absolute beginners but will stretch capable students with a basic grasp of parts of speech and a good guide.

Updated review, it gets worse

Oh dear, the longer you listen the less appealing it becomes, his English grammar and pronunciation deteriorate, I find it hard to justify buying this.

I have learned most of what I now know (from a structural standpoint at least) from Behind the Wheel Portuguese.

nice starter

You won't be fluent after mastering this book, but you will have a nice start in that direction. It gives you a good foundation.
