About this listen

Actor David Suchet recalls his experience of playing Agatha Christie's world-famous detective, Hercule Poirot, for almost a quarter of a century.

In the summer of 2013 David Suchet filmed his final scenes as Hercule Poirot. After 24 years in the role, he will have played the character in every story that Agatha Christie wrote about him (bar one, deemed unfilmable) and he will bid adieu to a role and a character that have changed his life.

In Poirot and Me, David Suchet tells the story of how he secured the part, with the blessing of Agatha Christie's daughter, and set himself the task of presenting the most authentic Poirot that had ever been filmed. David Suchet is uniquely placed to write the ultimate companion to one of the world's longest running television series.

Peppered with anecdotes about filming, including many tales of the guest stars who have appeared over the years, the book is essential for Poirot fans all over the world.

Settle down with Mr. Suchet, and prepare to be entertained by this gentle, kindly and humble soul narrating his life with Poirot, that mainstay of ITV. It's a perfectly charming book, warm and detailing an astonishingly successful acting career in an endearing fashion.

What did you like most about Poirot and Me?

David Suchet is an excellent reader and his description of how he prepared to play Poirot is fascinating. He had never read any Agatha Christie before he was offered the part and then read the whole lot and made copious notes on Poirot's character, idiosyncracies, dress etc. He had various arguments with producers about these things because he was convinced that he was right in his view of the character. And, since he has been the definitive Poirot, who can disagree.

What did you like best about this story?

The juggling between Suchet's playing Poirot and his need to make a living between the various series and the mention of various actors who appeared with him without its getting 'luvvy' which is where most acting autobiographies fall down.

What does David Suchet bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The voice, of course, because, when he quotes Poirot, he IS Poirot!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't see how you could film it.

Any additional comments?

The book made me want to see all the episodes again because, although they've been repeated (and are still being repeated) ad nauseum, I know I shall see them with new interest and a different viewpoint.

Fascinating!

A fantastic telling of the journey by Sir David Suchet of one of the greatest fictional characters being brought to life, and the big screen, by Sir David Suchet who portrayed Poirot so wonderfully in every story Agatha Christie wrote for the uneaque little Belgian.

A fantastic telling of one of the greatest fiction

A very interesting and informative listen. I feel the experience was more intimate due to the author being the narrator. Highly recommended to followers of the books and television series.

Where does Poirot and Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best Audiobooks I've listed to.

What other book might you compare Poirot and Me to, and why?

I would compare it to David Attenborough's Life on Air Audiobook, because it really gives you a different perspective not only on the programs but on the person themselves.

Have you listened to any of David Suchet’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have not listed to any of David Suchet's other performances so I'm not able to compare it.

Any additional comments?

This book is absolutely brilliant. It gives you a different view on the best portrayal of Poirot we've ever had. You also get double the pleasure because you hear it from David Suchet himself. Highly recommended.
