About this listen

Alpha Company is embarking on a grand mission, crossing the Dead Lands to find and conquer Gwain’s Keep. Led by Alburet, most of the guild embarks on what could be an epic and memorable journey, as they aim at being the first Two-souled guild to capture a keep.

Besides safeguarding the members of the guild, Alburet also has to worry about the natives that are with them on their journey. Deidre Crowley, Stacia’s sister, is the one he worries about most, having sworn to see her safely across the lifeless desolation of the Dead Lands.

Having to be ultra-vigilant during the day, night brings welcome relief and relaxation to the raid.

For Alburet, Karen, and Stacia, it also brings their chance to help Fluffball come to grips with her past.

Compared with the previous books in this series, far too much of the story is based on polygamy. Questionable at that, unless later books point out a sinister goal behind the AI programming, because as it stands, more than half of this book is people getting involved in sexual situations immediately after confronting very painful memories. There was very little continuation of plot compared to the previous books, and whilst we do start to get a better understanding of the main characters backgrounds, instead of that being interspersed between plot, it's between rather creepy sexual encounters. The journey to the Keep itself is barely touched upon by comparison, and only the last 2 hours of the book really push anything regarding the world's plot.

I didn't hate it, but the balance in this book was very different to the previous ones, and I have to say, I found the (to me at least) obvious manipulation of people in a vulnerable state to be a little unnerving. More so because there was no hint that it was intentional.

Too focused on erotica

This series has continued to get better and better, and book 4 is no exception. The narrator is incredibly talented and breathes life into each character. There are some possible triggering moments that are beautifully handled.

A fantastic road trip adventure.
