Summary

The new novel from Sunday Times best-selling author Louise Doughty.

Platform Seven at 4am: Peterborough Railway Station is deserted. The man crossing the covered walkway on this freezing November morning is confident he's alone. As he sits on the metal bench at the far end of the platform it is clear his choice is strategic - he's as far away from the night staff as he can get.

What the man doesn't realise is that he has company. Lisa Evans knows what he has decided. She knows what he is about to do as she tries and fails to stop him walking to the platform edge.

Two deaths on Platform Seven. Two fatalities in 18 months - surely they're connected?

No one is more desperate to understand what connects them than Lisa Evans herself. After all, she was the first of the two to die.

Engaging and lovely story

The first 3 chapters are a bit confusing and I wasn't sure I would continue. But so pleased I did as the story becomes so rich and the various characters are beautifully woven together.

Excellent, moving, unusual

It took a while to get into this book I nearly gave up after two hours of Lisa on platform seven, however I am so glad I persevered. This book on every level is very clever, its about coercive relationships at different levels. It is edgy and does not necessarily give the reader what you might want but that is what makes it so interesting. At the start as a listener I could not imagine how the strands could come together they seemed so random however the author brings them together beautifully. This is a cleverly crated superior novel and one I struggled to pause.

Interesting start becomes a NON STORY

Literally the middle of the book is not worth reading and the long awaited ending is seriously lacking. I have never been so irritated about a book and this is the first bad review I've ever bothered to leave. Literally don't waste your life!! Pro- The narrator had a nice voice.

Awful

Maybe awful is a bit strong but I can honestly say it felt like a boring and pointless story.
Didn’t really get the point of the other random characters, the story didn’t actually go anywhere and nothing really happened.

Such a shame as I had read other disappointing reviews but thought I’d give it a go... wish I didn’t!

Wholly Dissatisfying...

If you like ghost stories but prefer them to include an actual mystery surrounding the death of the ghost in question, this is not the book for you. If you like ghost stories where some kind of super natural moment or triumphant miracle occurs this is not the story for you. Beautifully written prose, the author has proven she can string together a series of pretty sentences. But overall they amount to... Nothing. It's just repetitive with no real stakes and no real closure. And for some reason, it seems like the author has written the female characters to be weak minded, empty vessels and she berates them throughout the book. It's almost as if she wanted the readers to judge these women for their stupidity, poor choices and blasé attitudes toward their own lives. There wasn't one character that we truly got to know or that we learned enough about to care about. The main character, our neighborhood friendly ghost, was so annoyingly indecisive even in death that I almost didn't even want to find out what happebed to her. And she, like the story and the narrator's montone voice, remained static throughout. This book and Apple Tree Yard got so many great reviews but I found both a bit bleh.

Olivia Dowd's masterly narration breathes life int

A study of love in all its terrible forms and the consequences of such longings live on, long after the subjects are dead and buried. But equally love can endure after death, its power to sustain us undiminished by time or distance, fed by our memories of desire, need and happiness.

In the end this story finishes on an upbeat note that repeats what was said in the previous sentence, in a myriad of ways. We are all looking for love, even if not consciously doing so, and sometimes, unfortunately, we find love that consumes us utterly and leaves nothing behind but an echo of our former selves.

Disappointing!

I loved the idea of this book but found it to be a run of the mill plot in the guise of a ghost story. Some of the authors ideas were good but were poorly executed. The last half hour was decent but not worth wasting over 9 hours to get there!

Unexpected

This was a sad, moving story but still full of hope. Beautifully read. Will definitely seek out this author again.

Reminded me

It reminded me that we’re not alone and for one of the bad things we go through we go through a thousand good things. Thank you for the reminder.

Tricky Plot but Well Done!

Similar to her book "Apple Tree Yard", the author is able to create a sense of foreboding, something dark and intangible looming over what may appear as mundane events and interactions. Very suspenseful and well told!
