Der junge Offizier Hermann erfährt von einem Freund, dass seine Großmutter, eine Gräfin, weiß, wie man drei Gewinnkarten des Pharospiels vorhersehen kann. Hermann sucht die Gräfin auf und bittet sie um das Geheimnis. Als diese nichts verraten möchten, droht er ihr mit einer ungeladenen Pistolen. Die Gräfin bekommt einen Herzanfall und stirbt. Am Abend der Beerdigung erscheint ihm die Gräfin als Geist und verrät ihm die Karten. Sie gewinnen auch. Erhält Hermann jetzt den erhofften Geldsegen?
