About this listen

At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortune nor rank. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all, it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.

I have three versions of Persuasion on Audible and I certainly have no need to be reminded of the text as I know it so well. But after listening to Anna Massey read Rebecca I was hooked, and immediately browsed to see what else she had narrated. She is simply the most superb reader and actress. How she manages to switch between a gruff male voice and a silly simpering female one is nothing short of a miracle. And one gets used to her clipped ‘t’s’ and imperial accent.
We have lost a precious person who died too young at 73.

Anna Massey, a lost gem

Although this version naturally loses something by being abridged, it does really work. Talking Classics books are excellent. Great narration.

So enjoyable
