Claire Barclay, owner of a mystery book tour company, collects three women at the Manchester airport who have flown in from Tucson, Arizona, then starts on a tour of Yorkshire and the sites of mystery novels. She meets the rest of the tour in York: two British couples and Phillip, a single man.

Claire has scheduled stops at sites of interest, starting with the York Chocolate Factory. Here, in pursuit of Phillip who will not stick with the tour, she finds the body of a security guard. She cannot see any connection with her tour and leaves York, driving the group up on the moors and stopping at the famous Ralph's Cross where moorland stretches for miles. Here, her American ladies report the sudden death of Phillip in the surrounding bog.

Detective Inspector Mark Evans, a friend of Phillip's and Claire's significant other, investigates. Mark tells her Phillip worked for Scotland Yard and was on the trail of a drug distribution scheme. Claire is determined her Tucson ladies will not be dragged into the murder inquiry or any other police investigation, but they are determined they will. They are intelligent, expert mystery novel fans, and observant. They precipitate Claire and themselves into a confrontation with the murderer.

Although the story mostly held my attention it was almost comical and unbelievable at times as Clare, the tour leader, assumed the roll of an investigator which was way beyond how it would be in real life. Although the story was read well the occasional strange pronunciation of words, eg Yogurt, was distracting.

Nicely read, a great story line and well thought out characters. I like how she writes and that her characters are not cliches but well developed. I’m going to see if they have her next book on Audible as I really enjoyed this one.

- NO accents at all - Yorkshire, Cornish, Welsh etc etc. They are all unidentifiable. It was painful at times - better to avoid the accents altogether.

Also this is a strangely dated and ill informed book - there’s no sense at all of British multiculturalism and the question of ‘why the British like curries’ was dealt with very embarrassingly. I actually squirmed. I won’t be listening to another, which is a shame as I quite liked the basic idea of regional crime writing tours. How can you discuss Yorkshire crime without reference to the late, wonderful Reginald Hill???? I wasn’t expecting much from this cosy crime, just low level entertainment while ill, but I cannot recommend this series.
