About this listen

The eighth book in the series finds John Pickett bound for England's scenic Lake District, where an unsigned letter has summoned him for an unspecified reason. Pickett and his wife Julia, the former Lady Fieldhurst, take a room at the Hart and Hound as the letter instructs him. Once installed there, however, Pickett can do nothing but wait for the anonymous contact to identify himself. A midnight search of the inn's register seems to identify the innkeeper, Ned Hawkins, as his man, but before Pickett can discover the reason for his summons, Hawkins is pushed from a cliff - surviving the fall only long enough to call Pickett's attention to the letter in his pocket.

With his contact dead and his only clue a letter containing nothing more than a rambling account of family news, Pickett knows he's on his own. But that isn't the worst of his problems: Julia saw the crime being committed, and although she can't identify the murderer, there is every indication that the killer knows he was seen - and intends to eliminate any possible witnesses.

Amidst a quirky cast of characters including a host of holiday-makers, a bucolic love triangle, an aspiring poet in the Romantic vein, and an old friend of his magistrate, Mr. Colquhoun, Pickett must discover the secret behind that urgent summons before a second, and far more personal, murder is committed.

Fun addition to this series. Love the leads and their unusual romance. The historical mystery is fun and well plotted. The books are well written.
The narrator adds an extra layer with an excellent performance.

I always enjoy the John Pickett mysteries and this was no exception. The mystery entertsins but my favourite aspect is the relationships he has with Julia and Mr. Colhoun.
The mystery here was complex and very intriguing. I liked the attention to detail regarding Ireland. The narrator also did an excellent job of speaking as Gaeilge.

Another great John Pickett story.

Wonderful investigation by John Pickett and his wife Lady Julia. Sheri Cobb South outdid herself with this story. I loved the vivid imagery and the tenderness in the story. The story has such a sweet insightful way of meshing people of the upper class with those of the trades. The characters of John Pickett and his wife are so endearing. I love how they communicate and try to help each other. The title of this book fits the plot so well too! The narration by Joel Froomkin is perfect! He has distinguished voices for the various characters, and his singing as John Pickett was spectacular at the dinner party. He adds authentic accents to various characters making the listen that much more enjoyable. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. This book is a standalone listen and part of a series. I cannot wait to listen to the next adventure by this talented author and narrator. The twists in the story are so well done.

Delightful Listen!

The author does not disappoint. I thought after so many books that the plot might get boring but not so in this case. I love John Pickett, he makes me laugh.
He is still in the honeymoon phase with his wife and I am glad to say that he has not changed a lot since he got married.
What makes this a great series is that there is a mystery to solve but we also see the characters trying to deal with there own problems.
There is no profanity or sexual content (this happens behind closed doors) but it has some mild violence, which is to be expected.
I would highly recommend this series and I am so glad the author stuck with the same narrator who is brilliant at voicing the characters.
