Summary

Nobody performs better under pressure. Regardless of the task, pressure ruthlessly diminishes our judgment, decision making, attention, dexterity, and performance in every professional and personal arena. In Performing Under Pressure, Drs. Hendrie Weisinger and J.P. Pawliw-Fry introduce us to the concept of pressure management, offering empirically tested short-term and long-term solutions to help us overcome the debilitating effects of pressure.

Performing Under Pressure tackles the greatest obstacle to personal success, whether in a sales presentation, at home, on the golf course, interviewing for a job, or performing onstage at Carnegie Hall. Despite sports mythology, no one rises to the occasion under pressure and does better than they do in practice. The reality is pressure makes us do worse and sometimes leads us to fail utterly. But there are things we can do to diminish its effects on our performance.

Performing Under Pressure draws on research from more than 12,000 people, and features the latest research from neuroscience and from the frontline experiences of Fortune 500 employees and managers, Navy SEALS, Olympic and other elite athletes, and others. It offers 22 specific strategies each of us can use to reduce pressure in our personal and professional lives and allow us to excel better in whatever we do.

Whether you're a corporate manager, a basketball player, or a student preparing for the SAT, Performing Under Pressure will help you do your best when it matters most.

Hidden gems

There are some wonderful hidden gems in this book that will help people deal with pressure.
However the stories go on for too long and there are too many of them.
I listened to a lot of it at a speed of 1.5.
Even so it was well worth the money

The first half was pretty good but the second was very tony robbins feel good. you can hear that on youtube. Also doesn't clearly explain optimism vs scepticism. Prefer critical thinking.

Required reading for anyone in a pressure job

This book is without a doubt required reading for anyone who is seeking to perform at their best in a pressure situation. It’s provides a step by step guide to overcoming the effects of your perception of the event and backs up every stage with solid research. A fascinating insight that I would highly recommend to seasoned professionals, leaders, athletes and novices to all of the above fields. The audio version makes for easy listening which has brought me back to the work in its entirety on three occasions.

As a performance coach I can state that this book is highly recommended...

Definitely worth a read

Some great insights into the effects of pressure, and some practical ways to deal with these effects.

Highly recommended for anyone dealing with pressure in any arena. I read it from a golfing perspective, but it is equally applicable for business, or just life in general.

THE de-pressurization Manual

loved how the authors started with Handy Immediate "pain killers" for dealing with pressure and then showed some long term "physiotherapy" for dealing with pressure.
I say dealing with as the tools ranged from de-pressurizing unnecessary self inflicted pressure to hardening ones soul to withstand real pressure. One of the most Important books to fully comprehend!
