How do you get rid of unwanted guests? What do you do if there's a racket in the quiet carriage? How should you eat peas, and behave in queues?

How to behave, like how to punctuate, is an aspect of life that many are no longer taught. Thankfully, Sandi Toksvig has come to the rescue with her entertaining guide to modern manners, with characteristic wit and perceptiveness.

"This little book will change your life - and that of your loved (and unloved) ones. For the better. And make you laugh." (John Humphrys)

humor is tounge in cheek and light-hearted for most, but sometimes cuts a little close to home with assumptions about listeners "if you think you are starving visit a third world country" / "don't question if you are refused at an apparantly empty restraunt"

funny, with uncomfortable moments.

A little obvious and boring in places but totally worth hanging in there for the brilliantly silly sarcasm.

Subtle Sarcasm

Since listening to Between the Stops by Sandi Toksvig, I've been buying anything and everything she's written. Peas and Queues is set out as letters to a child named Mary, so if the listener is not an 8 year old girl, it could be easy to find fault. I, however, was enchanted by the whole thing. I went to a tiny, little public school at primary level, where manners were considered as vital as maths and English. We would get into serious trouble if we were seen eating in the street, if we didn't say "Thank you" when a driver stopped to let us use a zebra crossing and heaven forfare we referred to our parents as anything other than 'Mother' and 'Father'. When I changed schools at 11 and went to the local comprehensive, I had a huge shock! I was relieved to know I do lay my table correctly, address letters appropriately and treat those employed in service industries with civility and grace. As a fully paid up subscriber to 'Manners Maketh the Man', I wish more people would listen to this book. Extra pleasure is ensured as the classy and distinguished Ms Toksvig narrates the book herself. Over 7 hours of a fun, light hearted listen that reminds me of a gentler time in my life. Ms Toksvig writes with dignity and wit and showers herself in glory. Super!

Perfect
