Summary

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. A ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness" - the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries, meditations, personal anecdotes, and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the listener already is - in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking - and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices.

The deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage listeners to work for peace in the world as they continue to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindful.

I watched a documentary about Thich Nhat Hanh a few years back, I've heard his name multiple times but frankly never came across any of his work before hand. I remember I found the documentary "funny": the snippets of his teaching, the quotes from his poem, the practices in Plum Village. I remember I thought it was, for the lack of a better word, rather bs. But I came across this book this year, in a different time, with a different context, but above all, a readiness to open and accept the ideas.
Beautifully written, not because there are fancy 5 syllable words, but because of the sheer simplicity fitted for the masses, and pure wisdom, in every single sentence.
I especially like the concept of inter-being. "We inter-are with one another and with all life." So well-explained, so strangely easy to understand yet easily oversighted.
The last part with the 14 Precept of the order of Interbeing is something that I will probably deep dive and research more critically on, at a 1st glance I'm not sure I can agree on the surface level of a few points.
All in all, I don't think I have understood the depth of this just yet, but I'm sure I will definitely reach for this book again and again.

My new favorite - Wisdom in every sentence

Highly recommend this book to anyone in general, but specifically those with an appreciation to Buddhism. This book is insightful, inspiring and adds a certain honesty about it which a lot of other mindfulness books don’t. It can be applied easily to general life and offers so much advice in such a short time. Very impressed! Will be reading again at some point :)

New fave book!
