Summary

In Harrow's eerie tale of madness and heartache, Patience, diagnosed with a "nervous disposition," is forced to take up residence in the rural, dilapidated Gravely House, in hopes that she will "calm down and get better" before her senior year begins. But when she discovers a girl living inside her bedroom mirror, the past comes back to haunt, in more ways than one.

Reminded me of a dramarama episode!

I enjoyed this, but after finally managing to ignore the American pronunciation of the word mirror (sorry but it’s so jarring). I was struck by the story reminding me of an old tv episode. Anyway, this actually wasn’t the same (far more upbeat ending), and I did enjoy it and the themes of social stigma and institutional “correction” it touched upon very lightly.
However I had to search the internet for 30 mins afterward to locate the 80’s tv show I’ve never really forgotten about “ghosts” in glass that had a far darker ending.
Enjoyable listen while waiting the next full length novel from Harrow. Her full length novels are excellent.

close to being great

i really liked the metaphor of the room full of shattered mirrors with reflections of “women betrayed by women”, that part was out of this world good (pun intended). the rest of the story was a bit scattered and too focused on a teenage comic-style adventure, i think a real shame, considering its immense potential to become a philosophical fable or a satire.
regarding the performance, i really disliked the voice, unfortunately it’s not on my preferred tune range, too childish and squeaky, had to listen to it faster, to curve the high notes. i know some like it, but i prefer a more mature, yet still feminine sounding voice when it comes to females.

A Tragic, Hopeful Tale of Haunting

CW: Animal Harm & Death (Cat, Violence Described), Parental Neglect, Abuse & Death of a Mentally Ill Person (Referenced)

The story follows a young girl with a head full of Wonder Woman and a heart full of parental neglect and grief who moves to a strange, old mansion after the death of her mother, which it is alluded to was mentally ill, beofe suffering and dying at the hands of horrific treatment. She meets a strange, unsettling friend in another girl who lives in her mirror. Time jumps to the complications of teenage Queer romance and different perspectives on life and conformity. Leading her back to her reflective friend...

I agree with some other reviews that this has the potential to really be something special, but the quality of the prose, a sad Queer girl, and hope free from sugarcoating just tipped this to a four for me. This is the first work of Harrow's I've read and it has certainly served as a good teaser to make me want more, even if there is a niggling feeling that this particular story just needed a tiny bit more to make it really sing. I think perhaps being extended into a novella or even novel with more interactions with the girl in the mirror, showing, discussing, and exploring more of the MC's Queerness and relationships, and having space for the haunting gulf of her father's neglect and the spectre of her mother's death and horrific treatment. The ingredients and quality of prose here are so very good!

Ultimately, it's a wonderful short story and definitely one of the better ones in the Audible Included library. I definitely need to read more of Harrow's work!
