About this listen

A killer intoxicated by pain. Should Alex Madison stop her - or save her?

Across London, hospital patients are dying - in shockingly unnatural circumstances. A sadistic young woman is targeting them as they lie helpless in their beds, eking out every last sensation of pain as their lives ebb to an excruciating close.

The killer is a sadist, but careful too, so the police bring in forensic psychologist Dr. Alex Madison to track down what is clearly an extraordinary and damaged mind. For Alex, the case has a personal resonance he can’t reveal: he knows pain and addiction all too well, and must fight to control his own downward spiral long enough to stop the killer’s campaign of cruelty.

As Alex closes in on the killer, it becomes clear that there are darker forces at work, and a connection to his previous case ignites his worst fears. When he uncovers the shocking truth behind the killer’s motivations, Alex must decide: should he pursue the police’s version of justice - or hunt down the sinister organisation that has warped another soul?

Have to admit that I do relish some 'gory bits' and this definitely delivers on that score. Drug companies have a varied press and with good cause if this novel is to be believed. For much of the good they do, there is little doubt that some experiments should have been left well alone - as depicted here. Dr Alex Madison is a complex character with a failed marriage and a history of drug abuse but he is nevertheless likeable. He assists the police in the hunt for a vicious serial killer who tortures and kills at random, seemingly without remorse and with no apparent reason than to inflict as much pain on their victim as is possible. These scenes are graphic but not gratuitous although I warn you, they do not make for easy reading. I really did enjoy this book but feel that it could have been brought to a speedier end than the author devised .....but perhaps I was at fault having listened for too long!!! Not sure if I will read another in this series for a wee while as I feel they might well be of the same ilk and I should settle for something peaceful instead.
