SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

Over The Top [is] a lightning bolt – devastating and stirring … generous and frank.’ The Observer

Who gave Jonathan Van Ness permission to be the radiant human he is today? No one, honey.

The truth is, it hasn’t always been gorgeous for this beacon of positivity and joy.

Before he stole our hearts as the grooming and self-care expert on Netflix’s hit show Queer Eye, Jonathan was growing up in a small Midwestern town that didn’t understand why he was so…over the top. From choreographed carpet figure skating routines to the unavoidable fact that he wasjust so gay, Jonathan was an easy target and endured years ofjudgement, ridicule and trauma - yet none of it crushed his uniquely effervescent spirit.

Over the Top uncovers the pain and passion it took to end up becoming the model of self-love and acceptance that Jonathan is today. In this revelatory, raw, andrambunctious memoir, Jonathan shares never-before-told secrets and reveals sides of himself that the public has never seen. JVN fans may think they know the man behind the stiletto heels, the crop tops, and the iconic sayings, but there’s much more to him than meets the (queer) eye.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll come away knowing that no matter how broken or lost you may be, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song, you’re strong, and you’ve got this.

I love Jonathan from Queer Eye and was curious to find out more about his life. I honestly didn’t expect to be so inspired to love myself and keep learning how I can be more compassionate towards myself and others. Jonathan is a real modern day hero and everyone should listen to this book as it offers a real insight into the lives of people who are not fully accepted in our society. I am a white straight women but I can relate to everything he said - it’s a human condition to feel insecure and unaccepted. It’s very comforting having listened to his story and I’m so grateful he is being open about these issues. Love you JVN ❤️

Amazing. Hillarious, touching and brutally honest. JVN shines a light on many of the issues so many in the LGBTQ community have faced and still face today. JVN proves there is a life to be lived and a place for all of us! The only downside is that I listened to it on my walk to work and while i was walking, an old lady's small dog appeared from nowhere and began attacking my ankle! So when i see JVN on queer eye or hear his voice, i remember having a small viscious dog hanging from my trousers while i heard the words "Mom, ive been selling my body"

At first I felt that I would've enjoyed the book more if I was American and was able to relate or at least now what he was talking about when referencing cultural things during his childhood. But the part I enjoyed the most is when he started working in California, to the end of the book. It has made me see Jonathan as a tridimensional real person, and not just a celebrity. It has also given me hope for my life and my journey of self-love, and has inspired me to treat myself with more compassion and patience, and not think that everyone is doing better than me and everyone has better lives than mine.
This has also consolidated my interest in biographies.

The one thing I would've changed is his narration, there were really dramatic moments when I felt his narration should've shown a bit more of emotion.

gets better as it progresses

Yeah, ok, so JVN is an incredibly fast talker which can be a little hard to get your head around but explains why this book isn't longer! I didn't know his story before, this is very much a no holds barred account of his life but even the tragedy is spoken in a light hearted way so the listener doesn't get bummed out. Love him even more now and want to give hugs. Great audio.
