Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
This is the ultimate manual for living better and longer.
For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense of quality of life. Dr Peter Attia, the world's top longevity expert who is featured on Chris Hemsworth's National Geographic documentary Limitless, believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalised, proactive strategy for longevity.
This isn't 'biohacking,' it's science: a well-founded strategic approach to extending lifespan while improving our physical, cognitive and emotional health, making each decade better than the one before. With Outlive's practical advice and roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

Exceptional and not just for the longevity science
All 17h08 minutes complete. I’ve just finished listening and I’m currently too emotional (not what I was expecting from this book!) to even start to comment on the overall content.
However here are a few thoughts I had along the way:
- Only Peter Attia could make a ~6 minute narrative on box step ups compelling! (Chapter 11) 😆
- The extensive disclaimer about nutrition science & media, knowing how much he dislikes the subject, did NOT disappoint! (Chapter 14)
- Chapter 17 - just wow! Vulnerability++. Even if you’ve listened to almost every podcast, this goes so much further, the insights divulged can be life changing.
This book is an absolute must read. I genuinely believe that 80% of global problems would disappear over time if everyone read Outlive (and Extreme Ownership) once a year.
Truly grateful that Peter read the audiobook himself, it makes a big difference.

Brilliant book
I’ve been a fan of Peter for years and was looking forward to the release of Outlive. This book is amazing. First audiobook I have finished and immediately started it again. So much great information communicated in a clear and concise way. I am really glad Peter narrated it too as he has a great and an engaging manner. I’ll definitely be going back to audiobook. I really hope he does another book in the future.

Overall a good book and worth reading
Overall the book is good and does have valuable information, however it was not exactly what I was expecting having listened to Peter's podcast. More specifically:
Good:
- Content on CVD is overall pretty good and I like the sensible approach and good arguments criticising some of the research in the area and pointing the flaws
- Good to include exercise, sleep and diet in the discussion beyond the generic advice you would get from your doctor
- I liked the examples from his personal experience which gives credibility to what he is proposing - if anything, you would know that he has done the research for his own needs to begin with and not just to sell you a diet or a supplement which is the trend in the social media and youtube "experts" whichever side they are on - vegan, keto, carnivore - whatever...Once someones identity and livelihood is tied to specific diet or lifestyle, they are guaranteed to ignore the new research or anything that threatens their believe and income.
- It is good to acknowledge that we are not the same and have different needs - there isn't a perfect diet that will work for everyone no matter what the self-proclaimed health gurus are telling you
Where it was lacking:
- The section on exercise was too long and too tedious - explaining how to do an exercise and getting into details for very niche type of exercises - and let's be honest few of us can afford these specialist trainers - was pointless in my opinion. There were links to videos for some (which I did not check), which is better than explaining what it is, but still - it is like watching a video how to ride a bike.
- The examples about grip strength and life expectancy were repeated more than a few times - OK - there is a connection but we are talking again about observational studies - obviously if you are healthy and in good shape you would likely live longer... The research in this area is so confounded that all of these examples could be summaries into "being in good shape and healthy is likely going to extend your life and health span" - no need for these questionable grip strength examples.
- I expected a lot more practical advice what we could do and most of the time the book felt like it was more addressed to health-care practitioners than normal people. Even those of us interested in taking care of ourselves don't have all the time in the world to do research and probably can't afford the private care that the better doctors like Peter provide, so I was hoping this book will give the best advice as of now. Instead it was more generic which is intentional as stated in the book so it doesn't go out of date quickly
Overall a good book and worth reading - I wish the exercise section did not include that detailed description of exercise (maybe better suited as a video course or something, though without a trainer still questionable utility). Also I would have preferred a book with shorter shelf life in terms of the science but with specific advice based on the best evidence we have today.

A Forward-Thinking "Metamedical" Textbook
I'm a doctor in Europe. I share most of the same philosophies of this book, and aspire to provide this sort of care to my patients. In public practice, the service is not organised around "Medicine 3.0". I hope this changes.

Recommend book for some new perspectives and information
The book is about rethinking longevity, not just about living longer but having the quality of your life increase. Thinking about prevention rather than cure, and having concrete goals for 60/70/80/90 year old self
I found the start of the book very technical, but it turned around near the middle

Recommended for Everyone
As a long time listener to Peter's podcast, this books help to link those scattered pieces together and provided a holistic picture/framework which is instrumental for planning your own life/health.
Don't be misguided by the title - it does not only apply to those wish to outlive per se (this is not a goal for me for example), but to those who wanted to have a good life. Regardless of what your goal/dream is, a healthy body is fundamental to almost everything., and this books tells you how to be responsbile for yourself to build one.
I am revisiting some chapters after I finished the whole book, and I still keep listening to his podcast which brings in new perspectives and ideas - as Peter himself mentioned, there are things that changed often. For those things that change less often, you will mostly likely find some being touched by this book.
Again, recommended for everyone.

A timely book on a very topical subject.
I tip my academic hat to Peter Attia, whom I have enormous respect for in the field of longevity . Honest, sincere, and comprehensive without confusing the reader. He will resonate with many readers. Real-world advice, with realistic expectations, Peter Attia is evidence based with the willingness to change protocol when new evidence becomes available . Thank you for this book, which I could not put down . Thank you for your last chapter on mental health and emotional well-being, which gives the reader a perspective on the purpose of pursuing a long, healthy life.

Essential reading
I have listened to Peter Attia (Pattia as my husband calls him) since he launched The Drive. This book is a thorough but accessible assimilation of his ideas and passion. Anyone who is even vaguely interested in living better for longer should listen to this book. Listen rather than read as Peter has succeeded in delivering his content perfectly.

Life Changing for me emotionally
Being a fanatic reader of Stoic and other self-help esc books, I always thought my desire for consistent improvement and discipline was a positive. The final chapters of this book proved otherwise. These chapters revealed to me the root cause behind my destructive urge to 'always be better'. You might think you have control over your emotions and are 'mentally strong', but I promise you, your emotional health is hurting you more than you think. The rest of this book is already brilliant and life changing for some, but if your already semi-healthy like me and reading this book looking for small hacks and adjustments in the pursuit to "be great" as Dr Attia mentions in the book, then you will be met with a wake up call in the emotional health department.
