Story
Let me tell you all I know for sure. My name. Shauna. I woke up in a hospital bed missing six months of my memory. In the room was my loving boyfriend - how could I have forgotten him? - my uncle and my abusive stepmother. Everyone blames me for the tragic car accident that left me near death and my dear brother brain damaged. But what they say can't be true - can it? I believe the medicine is doing strange things to my memory. I'm unsure who I can trust and who I should run from. And I'm starting to remember things I've never known. Things not about me. I think I'm going crazy.

Summary
The story of how I, Julian Carter, and my precious two-year old son, Stephen, left Atlanta Georgia and found ourselves on a white sailboat, tossed about like a cork on a raging sea off of Australia's northern tip in 1963, is harrowing.
But it pales in comparison to what happened deep in the jungle where I was taken as a slave by a savage tribe unknown to the world. Some places dwell in darkness so deep that even God seems to stay away.
There, my mind was torn in two by the gods of the earth. There, one life ended so another could begin. Some will say I was a fool for making the choices I made. But they would have done the same. They, too, would have embraced death if they knew what I knew, and saw through my eyes.

Excellent book
It took me a little bit to get into this book because I thought that it was just going to be a book about a woman held prisoner by a tribe. I'm so glad that I continued to listen because it was so much more than I thought it would be. Listen and you'll see!

More Than A Great Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Outlaw to be better than the print version?
This is the type of story that draws you into the scenes. Hearing it as an audio book was like being a part of the action.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Outlaw?
I was on that island with that tribe learning about myself just as much as the characters were. This was truly a journey of self-discovery.

Deep Truth, what a blessing
Ted Dekker has an incredible God-given talent to weave truth into deep plots and stories. Indeed, this life is so short in comparison with eternity and I believe our on reason for staying here is to bring other people into the Kingdom of God, or should I say, be the vessels for God to bring other people to know Him.
The narrator was brilliant, she completely pulled you into the story. So thank you to you both, and may God continue to bless you with anointed stories!

Painful, tedious, and twisted scripture
Most of the reviews are really positive, so I feel like I must have read a different book entirely.
Here's my advice, if you don't like it in the first 30 minutes, give up. I wish I had. But because it was Ted Dekker, I was sure it was going to get better. It did not.
The first 2/3 of the book is tedious internal dialogue which makes it feel like the plot is stuck in molasses. The last 1/3 is a rambling sermon about how we should all quit caring about others and ourselves so we can be our true selves, which we only are when we sleep...or something. It's a voodoo-like hodgepodge of Christianity, Zen Buddhism, humanism, and mysticism. The "forgiveness" aspect that moved most of the reviewers was just a tiny, improbable scene that isn't even fully developed.
With so many positive reviews, there must be something there I didn't get; but whatever it is...I didn't get it from the beginning.
One reason I stuck it out was I am hoping the rest of the trilogy is better. I was in the mood for a good Ted Dekker trilogy and didn't want to miss anything in book one. However, if the second one starts off as painful...I'll have to sit the rest out it out.

outlaw is an amazing story of love and redemption.
I loved this story by author Ted Dekker. It is expertly written, causing the reader to look at all of life through different eyes. Through its tale of love and forgiveness it will broaden your mind as to what God's love really looks like. Don't miss experiencing Outlaw.

I read some, I listen some
If you could sum up Outlaw in three words, what would they be?
Spiritually uplifting honest
What did you like best about this story?
The Spiritual lessons toward the end of the book.
Have you listened to any of Nicola Barber’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
no, but the hard part for me was Julia was a young lady from Georgia with a British accent.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A Savior in a savage land.
Any additional comments?
I really love Ted Dekker and I enjoyed this book for the most part. It was a simple book well written. But, I felt there were a few holes in the book. We begin with a wonderful love story of self sacrifice and survival, and are taken to an intense slow build up to what seems like a very exciting climax. Then we are veered off to the right 18 years later. It felt like there was a whole section missing and some of my favorite characters were never heard from again or just mentioned briefly. I feel like I was left swaying in the middle a bit. I can honestly say I predicted the ending it kind of had the same feel that Green had for me. I don't know what I was expecting because I loved the spiritual context and the writing but it all felt a little rushed, what was a 10 hour audio book read slowly and deliberately by Nicole Barber would have been about an three hour read for myself . I am a huge audio book listener and I normally buy the hard back also, so I can take it with me wherever I might go until I'm finished. Ms.Barber is a fine reader but I just didn't like her style on this book- A Georgia southern belle with an English accent- just didn't work for me. In saying all of this I love the way Ted Dekker thinks this is why I love his writing, but this is just my two cents worth on Outlaw.
