About this listen

From the author of The Missing Girl, Jenny Quintana’s gripping novel Our Dark Secret, tells the story of two girls, two deaths and two decades of silence....

The crazy girls, they called them – or at least, Elizabeth liked to think they did. As a teenager in the late 1970s, she was clever, overweight and a perfect victim for the bullies. Then Rachel and her family arrived in town and, for Elizabeth, it was as if a light had been switched on. She was drawn to the bright and beautiful Rachel like a moth to a flame.

Rachel had her own reasons for wanting Elizabeth as a friend and, although their relationship was far from equal, Elizabeth would do anything for Rachel.

Then the first body was discovered.

Twenty years on, Elizabeth wants nothing more than to keep the secrets of her teenage years where they belong: in the past. But another body has been found, and she can’t keep running from what happened.

Can she?

I've wanted this book for a while so I was thrilled to find it in the audible sale, unfortunately I was disappointed by the story.
The protagonist wasn't that interesting, she was really pitiful. I felt bad for her but I didn't really like her. The story didn't really go anywhere, it was long, drawn out and the ending was really dull.

I was disappointed

Brilliant story. The character Elizabeth is so engaging and her uncomfortably real love for her friend is warming yet horrifying.

Loved it.

This book is a slow burner for sure. Definitely not the fast paced kind of thriller I'm used to, or was expecting.
I started it on a sleepy morning, and was quickly drawn into the main character, Elizabeth's story. So much so that I had finished it by the end of the day.
It's charming, heartwarming, heartbreaking and dark all in one.
Definitely recommend

Not what I was expecting but somehow better...

8 hours and 43 minutes of my life that I'll never get back again. Nothing happens, there is no plot and it's impossible to warm to the characters. The narrator can't pronounce Odysseus. I have nothing good to say about this book

Dull, dreary and depressing

I really wanted to like this book, but it was just so slow, dull, and it didn’t go anywhere. The pace never really picked up and I felt no real urgency to finish the book. Very disappointed with the ending!
On a positive note - the narrator was good.

So slow........
