About this listen

'The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.'

Described by Chesterton as a 'spiritual autobiography', Orthodoxy is his profound exploration of why people hold faith. Since its publication in 1908, it has become a Christian apologetics classic.

Written in his signature style – full of paradox, wit and poetic insight – Chesterton outlines an intellectually rigorous defence of the Christian faith. Part autobiography, part theology, Orthodoxy traces Chesterton's personal journey from a crisis of doubt to belief, arguing that Christianity uniquely satisfies the long-established human need for truth, imagination and joy. Rather than religious doctrine being dry or dogmatic in any way, Chesterton relays it as adventurous and romantic – and the only worldview that allows enough room to make sense of the world's wonders and contradictions. This audiobook is expertly narrated by the talented David Rintoul.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874 – 1936) was an English novelist, philosopher, journalist and critic. A Christian apologist, he is famed for creating the fictional priest-detective Father Brown. His writing was also renowned for his sense of humour: known as 'the prince of paradox', Chesterton often turned common sayings upside down. Admired by several of his literary contemporaries, Chesterton's work is still widely read today.
