Summary

Elizabeth Bennet, l'une des quatre filles d'un hobereau de province anglais, voit arriver dans sa campagne un gentilhomme fortuné. Celui-ci s'intéresse à sa sœur Jane. L'ami du gentilhomme, encore mieux nanti, est peu cordial. Les Bennet ne l'apprécient pas. Mais l'évolution des situations et des circonstances va tout bouleverser et les résultats des joutes amoureuses réserveront bien des surprises.

L'intérêt de ce récit réside dans la peinture ironique, parfois cruelle mais toujours avec humour, de la société anglaise du XVIIIe siècle. Les caractères sont bien campés et les dialogues savoureux. Plein de rebondissements, le récit ne connaît pas de longueur. Ce roman est considéré, à juste titre, comme le meilleur des six écrits par Jane Austen.
