The first book in this series has some bright moments and the story moves at a decent pace, but I cant help but feel that there is an important element missing. The drama is high from the start but never really lands. The main antagonist is one dimensional and is a waxed mustache away from being the quintessential corporate bad guy trope. Over all not a terrible story, but unlikely to be one i continue.

This should be called ' trouble at the science lab ', it's got all the elements for a good story but somehow manages to bore me to tears.

Very interesting take on magic, sci-fi and fantasy. Brilliant for young readers who can feel close connection to the main character. And mature readers will find the story gripping as well. I intend to buy for me and my kids the next books from the series.

I really enjoyed the story, and definitely wanted to keep listening - it keeps you engaged and is a fun read. The plot is a little bit ridiculous - some of it just doesn’t make a lot of sense why this would be happening to the test subjects (just pure evilness?) and they don’t really fully explain what’s going on, but it was still enjoyable. I do wish the ending would’ve been more of an explainer/wrap up rather than “and now you need to read the next book” kind of ending, but I would still recommend it.
