Summary

A new original series from Netflix

"Not just a tale of prisons, drugs, crime, or justice; it is, simply put, a beautifully told story about how incredible women can be" (Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love.)

With her career, live-in boyfriend and loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the rebellious young woman who got mixed up with drug runners and delivered a suitcase of drug money to Europe over a decade ago. But when she least expects it, her reckless past catches up with her; convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at an infamous women's prison in Connecticut, Piper becomes inmate #11187-424.

From her first strip search to her final release, she learns to navigate this strange world with its arbitrary rules and codes, its unpredictable, even dangerous relationships. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with tokens of generosity, hard truths and simple acts of acceptance.

Now an original comedy-drama series from Netflix, Piper's story is a fascinating, heartbreaking and often hilarious insight into life on the inside.

Critic reviews

"A bighearted book that depicts life in a women's prison with great detail and - crucially - with empathy and respect for Piper Kerman's fellow prisoners." (Dave Eggers, bestselling author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius)
"A fantastic tale from the Siberia of America's war on drugs and a rippingly fun read right down to the unexpected moment of closure." ( Elle magazine USA)

loved it

Loved it from start to finish. This will be a book to remember. Funny and thought provokingingly sad at the same time.

A bit disappointing..

Not a lot really happens and at times the author comes off as a little superior.

Excellent but not as good as the TV show

Good narration, but different from the TV series, would highly recommend before watching. Slightly abrupt ending.

Diappointed

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story needed to be fleshed out more. At one time I thought I had an abridged version as the storyline just fizzled away.

Would you recommend Orange Is the New Black to your friends? Why or why not?

It was okay

What about Cassandra Campbell’s performance did you like?

Didn't hate it, but no depth, or was that just the story??

Do you think Orange Is the New Black needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

It would be nice to know what happened to the characters

Orange is the new Black

Interesting insight in to prison life, all done with a great sense of humour. A woman in prison trying to look on the bright side of things and use humour to get her through her prison stint.

Different from the TV series; Good in its own way

What did you like most about Orange Is the New Black?

I liked the fact that this was a woman's own account of being in prison and perhaps would give a small insight into what it may be like.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Piper Kerman was my favourite character, probably because this is a 1st person account of someone's experience and you start to identify with them in small bits. I also found that I really liked Red, she was very motherly and was quite interesting.

Have you listened to any of Cassandra Campbell’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have never listened to any of the narrators other books. However I found her voice was a little robotic and she did a lot of the same voices for different characters, which at times was a little confusing. I did get used to her robotic drone and eventually stopped noticing.

Any additional comments?

This is a very interesting listen. I had watched the first series of the TV series and found the book to be a very different animal altogether. I found that some of the characters in the book had been amalgamated to form characters in the TV series so it took me a while to try and separate the two, once I did though I was glad I had chosen to listen to this book and would recommend to others.
