Summary

When retiring isn't an option, it's kill or be killed.

Stacks Fischer is a killer for hire. For more than three decades, he’s loyally served the Syndicate Corporation as its most-feared and respected enforcer around the solar system. He’s buried the company’s dirty laundry six feet deep, no matter who had to be taken out to do it.

Now, Stacks has a problem - he’s losing his mind to incurable form of dementia, and unwittingly spilling corporate secrets in public.

When SynCorp decides Fischer has outlived his usefulness, they decide it's time to permanently retire him. But Stacks isn’t quite ready to go. With every one of SynCorp’s Five Factions gunning for him - and his own mind slowly rebelling - Fischer leads a pack of would-be assassins in a final, deadly chase across the solar system.

The old hit man refuses to fade quietly into oblivion at the hands of his disease or the business he's dedicated his life to. He’s choosing an Optional Retirement Plan.

Don't miss this pulse-pounding science fiction thriller filled with twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It's perfect for fans of Titanborn, The Expanse, and Minority Report.

Really entertaining, I couldn't stop listening.

As always RC Bray read this brilliantly. The story was action packed and well paced. It also gave me an insight into Alzheimer's disease which I honestly did not expect. I would like to know more about the writer's research and whether they have direct knowledge of the disease as their descriptions were incredibly vivid.

Fantastic book

This fantastic book blends sci fi with noir to produce an excellent story with a main character who you know is a bad guy but you cannot help but like him. When the story switches to him coming to terms with his disease it puts him in a different light and made me wonder how I would handle something as big as that in my life, which in my eyes is a sign of excellent writing. Overall this is a fantastic story, great characters and as usual RC Bray draws the listener into the world in such a way that you get totally absorbed.

Whatever your name is....

He had been the most famous and feared enforced in the universe, Tony's go-to guy. But now he was old had been replaced by Richard, a younger enforcer, Tony's right hand man. And more than that, he was becoming a liability, talking about things he shouldn't to anyone who would listen, blanks in his daily life, memory failing. And there was no going back. No cure for this Old Man disease. Tony called him in to tell him he has three days to put His affairs in order before his retirement began. But others are not as generous: with a price on his head, it seems everyone else is out to get him.

This fast actioned, warm hearted, humerous story, unusual in the main protagonist being someone well past their sell-by date, is a terrific read which holds attention and excitement from the first sentence to the end. Written in the first person, the reader is right there with the old enforcer as, against all the odds, he runs between planets and old friends he hopes he can still trust. And also from himself and the advancing illness. And he talks directly to his audience: very c!every done. R.G.Bray, narrator is our old assassin, breathing even more life into his rapidly disintegrating world, as well as giving individual voice to all other characters and reading with emotional involvement, great pacing and intonation. A great performance.

I was very fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Optional Retirement Plan, by the rights holder, via Aethon publishing and Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. I had been looking forward to reading this book and it exceeded my expectations. Author Chris Pourteau is now definitely on my favourite authors list and I look forward to discovering more of his work in the future. A wholehearted recommendation to all who enjoy S.F, thrillers and action stories.

not what you are expecting

Tried this book because of R.C. Bray but have found a new author.
The story was not what I expected in anyway and dealt with some very real issues in an interesting way.

Fast Paced and well written

A great story which has given me an insight into what my own grandad went through. A very well written story which moves along at a decent pace, interlaced with some very amusing comedic moments. Highly recommended for something that's a little different.

A Noir Gut Punch!

Optional Retirement Plan—for starters, weird name, but oddly fitting.

Pourteau wrote a powerful story that includes snark, humor, and actual feels. Following a main character with Alzheimers was something I never thought I'd experience and it was done tastefully af. The addition of RC Bray as narrator was awesome, but this story and the writing stands alone. More Stacks!

Perfect Narration!

If there ever was a perfect pairing of a character and a narrator, this is it. R. C. Bray does a grumpy, tired, old interplanetary contract killer perfectly. While not a detective story, the book had a definite "film noir" feel to it. Some of the phrases to explain what was happening was just too funny. Finished the book in less than 2 days, loved it, and hopefully there is more Stacks in the future!

Rc Bray excellent as always

To be honest I don’t normally listen to this genre but when I saw who the narrator was I decided to give it a try. And I’m glad I did. It was fun book full of action I don’t think I’ve ever listened to audiobook yet narrated by bray that I didn’t enjoy. I came across rc bray has a way of bringing you into the story and actually connecting with the characters. If you enjoy this genre or if you’re just a fan of Bray’s work as I am I definitely recommend giving this story a try. I was given this audio in exchange for honest and fair review.

I. Loved. This. Book.

I knew I would love this book from the description. I had no idea I would love it this much!!!!

This is a well-written story told ala "How I Met Your Mother." The main character, Stacks (what a great name!) is telling the story of what happened to him. You don't know until the end who he's speaking to and that big reveal just made an incredibly well-written story even more so. I loved it, loved it, loved it!!

Stacks is a great character. He's losing his mind but in his younger days, he was an enforcer for what is basically the mafia. The story is set in the future on a colonized Mars so the bad guys are not mafioso per se. Stacks is a fan and references characters from mafia movies though. He wasn't a good guy but you like him nonetheless.

RC Bray was excellent! There were some wonderful syntax and colorful phrases throughout this listen (I hate that I didn't write some of them down!) and they were delivered how only RC Bray can - with grit and a smirk with a sly grin on the side.

Brilliantly Done

Absolutely brilliant! This book is an interesting and perfect blend of action, mystery, humor, and the despair of Alzheimers. I will definitely look for more from this author. As far as RC Bray, well he can narrate an IRS tax debt letter and it would be captivating. Cheers!

A new take on a traditional story

Throughout the story I had to keep reminding myself that the protagonist is a hitman and really doesn’t deserve me feeling bad for him. Of course he has his redeeming qualities and anyone with “old timers” has my sympathy but Stacks is a corporate enforcer protecting a bunch of rich criminals. Solid writing and a great narrator make this an easy choice to pick up. Plenty of ups and downs and a great ending.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

The Mob on Mars

Chris Pouteau brings us Eugene "Stacks" Fischer, an aging Hitman for a powerful crime boss. R.C. Bray masterfully brings Stacks to life, Bray is one of the best voices of our time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was very entertaining. I've since learned that there are many more books in this universe, some of which may be coming to audible. I am looking forward to more. I highly recommend this book

You've got to love this guy!

Such a different type of hero you've gotta love. Even though his 'old timers' is a serious issue in his line of work, he's handling it with lots of fun and style. I do hope the author's imagination continues to bring more to audio. The narrator as always delivers a great reading.
