About this listen

*This book is published in the US as Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin's Most Dangerous Hackers. The text is unchanged for this edition, except for the addition of a new foreword.*

'With the nuance of a reporter and the pace of a thriller writer, Andy Greenberg gives us a glimpse of the cyberwars of the future while at the same time placing his story in the long arc of Russian and Ukrainian history.' -Anne Applebaum, bestselling author of Twilight of Democracy

'A chilling account of a Kremlin-led cyberattack, a new front in global conflict" -Financial Times

The true story of the most devastating act of cyberwarfare in history and the desperate hunt to identify and track the elite Russian agents behind it.

In 2014, the world witnessed the start of a mysterious series of cyberattacks. Targeting American utility companies, NATO, and electric grids in Eastern Europe, the strikes grew ever more brazen. They culminated in the summer of 2017, when the malware known as NotPetya was unleashed, penetrating, disrupting, and paralyzing some of the world's largest businesses. At the attack's epicenter in Ukraine, ATMs froze. The railway and postal systems shut down. Hospitals went dark. NotPetya spread around the world, inflicting an unprecedented ten billion dollars in damage - the largest, most destructive cyberattack the world had ever seen.

This is the true story of the hunt to unmask Sandworm: the group of hackers behind the attacks working in service of Russia's military intelligence agency. Following the years-long, globe-spanning work of the detectives tracking them, Operation Sandworm also exposes the larger story of a new global arms race, and the geopolitical chaos it is unleashing on the world. A narrative full of twists and turns, it captures a chilling new reality: in a war without borders, all of us live on the frontline.

fascinating topic no doubt, brilliantly written and put together and made a fantastic example how to present a highly complex topic in a compelling, entertaining, understandable way without skipping on the details. bravo.

this should be the single most important piece of modern literature read by everyone and taught in schools!

Nicely narrated easy listening; a comprehensive coverage of civilian-targeted psychological cyber warfare, and the people and institutions involved in forensically attributing these attacks to state sponsored groups. How some Government’s are unwilling to condemn or create policy / conventions / red lines against such warfare, so as not to close the door to their potential exploitation of the same. Sanctions are often as good as it gets; even these are slow to emerge. Points out that trends towards higher levels of automation and connectivity make countries more susceptible to crippling attacks, exampling disruption already caused, and hinting at what could be. Lose analogue old school backup systems and associated skills at our peril!

A real eye opener for me. Informative, well written and thought provoking. The world is on the edge of man made disaster from yet another source.

Why is this not bigger news?

If you want to understand the hidden world of global hacking, Sandworm by Andy Greenberg is an absolute must-listen.

This excellent audiobook dives deep into the reality of modern cyber warfare. It shines a light on a massive threat to the West that rarely gets enough attention, even though it touches every single one of us. It is a bit scary to realise what goes on behind the scenes, but this book explains it all perfectly.

Here is why I highly recommend it:

Fascinating Details: Greenberg has clearly done his homework. The book is incredibly well-researched, packed with facts that will keep you gripped from start to finish.

Real-World Impact: It breaks down complex cyber attacks and shows exactly how they impact our daily lives and national security.

Superb Narration: A good audiobook needs a good voice, and the narration here is spot on. It is clear, engaging, and makes the complex subject matter very easy to follow.

If you are looking for a thrilling true story that changes how you see the digital world, definitely give this one a go. A solid 5 out of 5!
