Die Geschichte von Onkel Toms Hütte ist fast 150 Jahre alt. Harriet Beecher-Stowe (1811-1896) veröffentlichte sie im Jahre 1852 zuerst als Fortsetzungsgeschichte in einer Zeitung in Washington. Als das erste Kapitel erschienen war, löste es ein außerordentlich heftiges Interesse aus. Wurde doch der amerikanischen Gesellschaft in den Südstaaten erbarmungslos ein Spiegel vorgehalten, in dem nackte Gewalt und die Barbarei der Sklaverei zu besichtigen waren. Die Spirituals "Nobody Knows The Trouble I See" und "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" singt Manfred Krug.
