This was the "other" Lisa Jewell ....

Some of Lisa Jewel's books I love like "Then She Was Gone" and "Watching You" and are two of my favourites, gripping so well written and enjoyed every moment and would rate 5 star plus and hoping her next one "Invisible Girl" will be a corker too. Then there are the ones like "Ralph's Party", "I Found You" and "The Truth About Melody Browne" - all of which I lost interest in as seemed like not much to get my teeth into. Then there are "The Girls" - that I just did not like despite great reviews and only could read a short part of and "The Family Upstairs" which was the Lisa Jewell style I liked but just too depressing,

The wonderfully titled "One Hit Wonder" which I see was published in 2001 is another one I can't get into and just feels insipid and now that I see "Ralph's Party" was Lisa Jewell's first book, published in 1999 it all seems to make more sense, as the Lisa Jewel novels I adore (with the exception of The Family upstairs 2019) are her latest two and her style has simply evolved. Although "One Hit Wonder" is a new Audible release it it nearly 20 years old.

So mystery solved there, I love the modern Lisa Jewell, but not so much the vintage, though I did read (as opposed to listen to) The Third Wife when it was first published in 2014 and loved that. So if you. like me love her latest work, just check the date as Audible are working hard to produce her sizeable back catalogue which, while good, is just not cutting edge like her latest work.

I might have persevered with this if it had not been for the narration which was so "Mumsy" - and I have to say though I have listened all the way through to Audiobooks narrated by Antonia Beamish I do find her a bit hard to listen to.

So looking forward to Invisbale Girl which hopefully will be narrated by Gabrielle Glaister like my other two favourites "Then She Was Gone" and "Watching You" but this one not for me

I laughed and cried

Although somewhat corny, the Cinderella story of Anna's transformation was a great listen. The narrator was superb and interpreted Jewell's humour superbly. Really enjoyed the book.

Deinfitley not a thriller

I enjoyed this book but it was definitely more chick lit than the thriller the description leads you to believe. A nice book but not like the more recent Lisa Jewell books I have listened to.

Enjoyable

I really liked this book and the narration is excellent. Felt it ended a little abrupt- I was waiting for something more profound

Not her best unfortunatly

normally a big fan of Lisa Jewell. But this was pretty dull and had a very basic story line. I found myself just not really caring what happened.

Not “crime & thriller / modern detective”

I’ve read/listened to many books by this author. I listen to a book a day on average, this length probably 2 books in 3 days, this took 5 days! I don’t read or listen to chick lit, there’s nothing wrong with that genre just too much I want to read in my preferred genres. This is what I image chick lit to be although this has a bit more substance to it.

...what happened?

I am a Lisa Jewell fan but I have no idea what happened with this book...as nothing much happens IN the book. Tried, but just couldn't finish it, didn't even bother going to last chapter.
