About this listen

"I need your help, Detective. Fire or water?"

Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD's Homicide Special Section receives an anonymous call asking him to go to a specific web address - a private broadcast. Hunter logs on, and a show devised for his eyes only immediately begins.

But the caller doesn't want Detective Hunter to just watch; he wants him to participate, and refusal is simply not an option. Forced to make a sickening choice, Hunter must sit and watch as an unidentified victim is tortured and murdered live over the Internet.

The LAPD, together with the FBI, use everything at their disposal to electronically trace the transmission down, but this killer is no amateur, and he has covered his tracks from start to finish. And before Hunter and his partner, Garcia, are even able to get their investigation going, Hunter receives a new phone call. A new website address. A new victim. But this time the killer has upgraded his game into a live murder reality show where anyone can cast the deciding vote.

I like the performance and the plot is complicated enough to keep me intereted, but there are too many details for me (which is typical of Carter) and I lose interest from time to time. It reminds me one of my professors. I really tried to do my best to listen to him, but he kept making digressions and my concentration just kept weakening. Same here. At times I had to listen to a Chapter twice because I missed an important turn, bored by the numbers "stretch 587, crash589" or by gore descriptions. Also,Robert Hunter is much too flawless for my liking...I don't believe he is for real...

Much praise to Chris Carter. The Robert Hunter series is captivating, with 'One by One' being the most gripping, gruesome and nail-bitting one yet. Excellent characters you can become invested in!

Gripping, suspenseful, loved it!!

Story wise, this one keeps pace in usual Chris Carter fashion. The insufferable Capt Blake seriously needs to be changed, how a person who blows up and over reacts to every bit of news made Captain is a joke. Also being unable to contribute a single thing to any case so far in the series of books is another of Blake's failings, and baffling. I'll be giving the books a break as if i hear of Hunters single malt collection one more time i'll be forced to never drink whisky again.
On to Judd. He's just becoming annoying, more so with his insane female voice impressions. I noticed its another narrator for the next two or so but then Judd is back, unfortunately in my opinion.

Once again another fast paced adventure for Hunter and Garcia. As usual the deaths are gruesome and the killer twisted. The format is the same as the other books so if you enjoyed the others you will enjoy this.

Another thriller
