About this listen

Behind every ordinary day, behind every ordinary story, there’s an extraordinary one just waiting to happen…

The uplifting, original new novel from the award-winning author of The Colour of Bee Larkham’s Murder.

TWO PEOPLE

Simon Sparks is the man you know from behind the counter at the local Prince Burger (‘hold the gherkin!’), fry shovelling, shelf stacking, hiding away from the world. And Jodie Brook is the single mum you see crossing the street with her son Zak – always chasing a dream she can’t reach.

ONE LIFE

What if life could be so much more? When Simon and Jodie’s worlds collide, it upends everything they know. But in chaos comes opportunity. And for every person who’s ever doubted them, they find someone who’ll finally believe…

ONE ORDINARY DAY AT A TIME

Critic reviews

"The best book I've read in ages. If you like Jessica Ryn or Gail Honeyman, you'll ADORE this. I cried twice, but walked away with my heart so very full. There is nothing predictable about this story: just like its fantastic characters and brilliant back drop. Can't recommend enough." (Anstey Harris, author of The Truths and Triumphs of Grace Atherton)

"Gorgeously written, wonderfully wise and utterly moving." (Miranda Dickinson)

"Another quirky, clever and original novel." (Cari Rosen)

Join Simon and Jody as their lives fall apart separately and together, and watch how between them, they begin to build their future. Watch these two not so ordinary people help each other in very different ways to fight to escape their pasts and how their dreams for better things to come might be more realistic than they'd thought. Prepare yourself for surprises and revalations along the way as sensitive issues are handled with insight and realism. You'll be surprised at how many of the ordinary characters in this story you end up caring about! The audio presentation adds to this beautiful book as the readers do a wonderful job, making the cast live. Thanks to them and Sarah J. Harris for this fantastic experience!

Great Story Telling

I really enjoyed this audiobook.

It’s a great story with well imagined, authentic feeling characters that I felt a huge amount of compassion for.

My only complaint is that the narrators were mismatched to the characters. They both had clear, pleasant voices to listen to but Simon’s voiced clashed with the physical descriptions of him and Jodie had a middle class voice that didn’t match her working class background. I got used to it in the end but it was jarring when it is a story to get lost in. If the physical descriptions of Simon had matched his voice, his narration would have been perfect.

That’s more a warning so that listeners can move past it sooner, don’t let it put you off spending a credit, it is totally worth it. Still a great listen.

A wonderful story

Sarah Harris has produced a excellent story. It obviously has been well researched.

I like how each chapter is devoted to either Simon or Jodie. It is in my opinion fast moving- I was drawn into both characters stories. There were some unexpected turns in the stories that deepened the reality of what was happening.

I read the book and listened to it during the night. The readers were exceptional- well done.

One Ordinary Day at a Tie

This bitter-sweet novel deals an array of subject matter including abuse, poverty, relationships, welfare of children in care and class amongst others. It is thoughtfully narrated. I was initially unsure about the male narrator, but he actually portrayed Simon perfectly. The story concerns the lives and times of Jodi & Simon and their families. There is sadness and tragedy but ultimately it’s feel good fiction told with humour.
