When his sister’s betrothed vanishes the night before her politically arranged marriage, Raff Barden must track and return the elusive groom to restore his family’s honour.

William de Foucart — known to his friends as Penn — had no choice but to abandon his intended, and with it his own earldom, when he fled the night before his enforced marriage. But ill-equipped to survive on the run he must trust the kindness of a stranger, Raff, to help him escape.

Unaware their fates are already entwined, the men journey north. But amidst the snow-capped forests an unexpected bond deepens into a far more precious relationship, one that will test all that they hold dear. And when secrets are finally revealed, both men must decide what they will risk for the one they love…

Critic reviews

"I absolutely adored Penn and Raff's story. Not only is it a propulsive romance that had me fully emotionally invested in the HEA; it is also a gorgeously written historical novel." (Women’s Prize for Fiction longlisted author of Careless, Kirsty Capes)

"Road trips and dagger fights and secret identities, oh my! Denny's debut is a beautifully thoughtful and deliciously sweet romance about getting lost in order to find oneself. I loved every moment I spent in the forest and on the road with Penn and Raff." (Freya Marske, International bestselling author of A Marvellous Light)

Beautifully written and wonderfully narrated

I loved the story and hearing the audible version was the icing on the cake. The narrators captured the characters perfectly. Highly recommended

An enjoyable and easy read

A read that somehow feels both lighthearted and emotionally melancholic, that won't neccesarily change your world, but will make you feel things.

Yes, there are stakes, but I never really felt they took the front row -- a good thing, if you're looking for a lighthearted read. At the same time, the narration dives deep into the feelings of the romantic leads focusing beautifully on their heartfelt pining for each other.

I admit I had the last few chapters on fast forward, but all in all I enjoyed it and do recommend it.

**spoilers below**

I felt Penn might be a bit inconsistent as a charactre: at one point Raff says Penn is "all barely concealed anger", but I feel he was painted more like melancholic and scared than angry. It might've worked better if one was to lean into that and then perhaps have him be surprised at the sarcastic quips escaping him every now and then.

I liked and enjoyed the performances, although it was a bit funny how one of the narrators was very good at a scotish accent and the other ... tried;)
