Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A vividly evocative novel set in Cold War and New Frontier era America, from the bestselling author of Birdsong and Charlotte Gray.

America, 1959. With two young children she adores, loving parents back in London, and an admired husband, Charlie, working at the British embassy in Washington, the world seems an effervescent place of parties, jazz and family happiness to Mary van der Linden. But the Eisenhower years are ending, and 1960 brings the presidential battle between two ambitious senators: John Kennedy and Richard Nixon. But when Frank, an American newspaper reporter, enters their lives Mary embarks on a passionate affair, all the while knowing that in the end she must confront an impossible decision.

Brilliantly descriptive

The plot is as described in the blurb - a reflection on the lives of the main characters set against the backdrop of 1959 America. However, the detail is in the characters, by the end of the book we know each one deeply. I found the book totally absorbing, not from events & plot twists but from understanding thoughts & emotions and why they all behaved as they did whether driven from shallow predictability or deep human emotions.

Sebastian never fails to write in the most eloquent style.

I always buy the book as well as audible and sadly for what ever reason half the story is missing. ie the whole trip to Brittany, paragraphs skipped. if I relied on this you don't fully appreciate what the story is. very very disappointed.

Enjoyed the book, but too many descriptions and there seemed to be no plot. Kept you guessing. only real excitement towards the end.

Narration good 👍
