Im Mittelpunkt der Erzählung steht ein Säufer namens "Old Bugs" im Jahr 1950, der in einer Kneipe Chicagos als Putzkraft arbeitet. Wer er wirklich ist und was er in seinem früheren Leben gewesen war, weiß man nicht. Aus seinem alten Leben hat er nur noch das Foto einer edel aussehenden Frau, über die er jedoch nicht reden möchte. Viele Besucher der Kneipe machen sich regelmäßig lustig über ihn, doch manchmal erwecken seine Haltung und seine Wortwahl den Eindruck, dass er einst aus der gebildeten Oberschicht stammte.
