About this listen

The town of Brenham, Texas, has gone to the dogs!

Curl up with your pup and sink into a delightful small-town mystery as riddles and rescues stack up in book one of a new cozy mystery series.

Marigold Evans first attempt at rescuing an abandoned pooch lands her in the underground sewer lines of Houston's Buffalo Bayou...and almost in jail, until Parker Jenson comes to her defense. Then a bad day only gets worse as the Lone Star Vet Clinic, where they both work, is vandalized and the list of suspects starts to climb. With the help of her fellow employees, Marigold sets out to simultaneously solve the crime, rehab the rescued dog, and help more dogs in crisis. But why would anyone continue to work against all their good efforts?

I enjoyed this book but unusually the author decided not to go with a murder for this mystery, instead it was a break in. While I did enjoy it I couldn't help but feel like I was waiting for something to happen. Don't get me wrong lots did happen but none of it was centred around the mystery and I got the impression the author just wanted to write about the dog rescue mission and the break in was just to get into a popular genre. I liked the characters but nobody went out of there way to investigate the case, not even the police. So I think it you are looking for a mystery you need to pass on this book but if you are looking for lovable dogs that need for ever homes, a budding romance dilemma, loyalty between friends, a few laughs, drama with ex boyfriends, law suits and a dodgy neighbour then give it a go. The story is very character driven and is all about setting up a non-profit dog rescue group. Not my normal read, as I am all about the mysteries but I still found it entertaining.
Nearly being arrested for being homeless wasn't the way Marigold wanted to remember her first dog rescue but setting up a rescue foundation isn't easy. Especially as on the same night someone broke in and vandalizes the vets clinic where she is a vets technician. Marigold though everybody loved the vets clinic and has no idea who could be responsible. As the staff talk it over, four possible suspect are named, an ex boyfriend of one of the staff, an owner whose dog couldn't be saved, the owners old college roommate who is after something and the grumpy neighbour who wants the vets gone. But who is responsible?
I liked the narrator. She used her voice well to create individual voices for the characters.

One for the dogs

I liked the dogs and mystery, but wasn't so keen on the religious aspect. An easy read.

Cute predictable read
