Summary

A young wife and mother - new to this town and to its secrets - learns just how much she doesn’t know in this tingly tale of all the things hiding in the dark at the top of the stairs, from bestselling author Brandi Reeds.

While renovating her Victorian home, Ana Clementine finds an ornate door buried under forty years of earth. Once she restores it to the attic, she starts hearing whispers, her loving husband has become a stranger, and her baby daughter learns a chilling new word. Maybe Ana has unlocked the house’s secrets. Or maybe she’s becoming just a little unhinged herself.

Brandi Reeds’s Oak Avenue is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

The performance ruined it for me

The story was ok (felt very cliche) but the narration was terrible. Distracted me from the story and several times I almost stopped altogether. Why do her make characters all sound ridiculous. She should have stuck to telling the story and not acting out the voices.

Ok story, terrible narration

I thought the story was, “Ok”
But the end was...well without spoiling this short read, the end of the story was not that great. The narration was awful and it really ruined the story for me I think. Had I read it without listening, I probably would have given 4 stars to the story itself.

Can we talk about the narrator?

Absolutely awful, I thought it was a robot until she deepened her voice for the male lines.
The story itself was lame, it had potential, but translated weak and pathetic, just like the protagonist.

A Haunted Past

Oak Avenue is definitely a book with many twist and turns that will give any same person nightmares. The story may be short but it is fast paced and well written. I can't wait to hear/read more from this author. I highly recommend this book.

Overall, not bad

I enjoyed this story. The narrator's voice seemed a little too robotic several times, but not so much that I felt the need to stop the book.

Formulaic but not bad

This story follows the typical couple-buys-an-old-house-and-discovers-it’s-haunted formula, with a prescribed and unsurprising ending. That said, it wasn’t terrible, just predictable. The main protagonist female is so annoyingly clueless about her bad marriage that I wanted to scream several times through out the story. The narrator made a decent effort to give life to a so-so story. If you like haunted house stories that have one or two original moments in it, you’ll like this book. Just don’t expect to be blown away by its non-twisty plot.

I really wanted to like this book....

I saw the negative reviews but decided to try the book anyway. Sadly, they were right. The overall story seems undeveloped, as if parts are missing. The narrator, (and I hate to say this) is quite terrible.

I don’t know

This story was so good, until it wasn’t. Nothing worse than a loose end. Does that mean a part two?

Nada Extraordinario

La historia es genérica y la narración no ofrece el suspense necesario de una clásica historia de terror.

Not very original - domestic abuse

There weren’t many twists or redeeming factors or characters in this book. Pretty boring and unnecessarily horrible to the main character who is a woman.
