Summary

A young wife and mother - new to this town and to its secrets - learns just how much she doesn’t know in this tingly tale of all the things hiding in the dark at the top of the stairs, from bestselling author Brandi Reeds.

While renovating her Victorian home, Ana Clementine finds an ornate door buried under forty years of earth. Once she restores it to the attic, she starts hearing whispers, her loving husband has become a stranger, and her baby daughter learns a chilling new word. Maybe Ana has unlocked the house’s secrets. Or maybe she’s becoming just a little unhinged herself.

Brandi Reeds’s Oak Avenue is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Ok story, terrible narration

I thought the story was, “Ok”
But the end was...well without spoiling this short read, the end of the story was not that great. The narration was awful and it really ruined the story for me I think. Had I read it without listening, I probably would have given 4 stars to the story itself.

The performance ruined it for me

The story was ok (felt very cliche) but the narration was terrible. Distracted me from the story and several times I almost stopped altogether. Why do her make characters all sound ridiculous. She should have stuck to telling the story and not acting out the voices.

Can we talk about the narrator?

Absolutely awful, I thought it was a robot until she deepened her voice for the male lines.
The story itself was lame, it had potential, but translated weak and pathetic, just like the protagonist.

Narrator

The narrators voice is excellent when Reading a woman’s part. But her attempt to speak into babies voice and a male voice was terrible. It ruined the story for me.

Should be a full book.

This is a very good short story and really should be a full novel. The end begs to be continued. It has every thing a horror story should have....ghosts, an attic, even a wizened old crone.

Had alot of Potential

The story started out good but the characters were one dimensional.

The narrator was not good at all and made it worse.

I think if this had been longer with more character development and a few more scares it could have been fairly good.

Decent story robotic narration

The narration sounded like Alexa was reading to me. Even when the female voice imitated male characters. Still though I'm willing to try another narrated Dark Corners story. You get used to the narration.

Don’t bother to listen...read it, maybe

This whole collection has the same narrator which is unfortunate. It is hard to rate the story itself when you are so put off by the narration. She reads some stories better than others, but still her “character” voices are irritating, annoying, and unrealistic. I don’t think I will be able to finish the series in audio version. Which means there are way too many books to read to bother with the remaining stories at all.

Creepy haunting!

Oak Avenue by Brandi Feeds is a scary haunting of a small family that buys and old house in the husband's home town. All the small town people know the husband but seem to despise the wife for being an outsider. The longer they stay there, the stranger the husband gets...The house also has a mind of it's own too! Creepy!

Sounds like it’s been performed by Siri

Overall decent story but the narration is extremely robotic and takes away from the story. Probably best read only
