Summary

A young wife and mother - new to this town and to its secrets - learns just how much she doesn’t know in this tingly tale of all the things hiding in the dark at the top of the stairs, from bestselling author Brandi Reeds.

While renovating her Victorian home, Ana Clementine finds an ornate door buried under forty years of earth. Once she restores it to the attic, she starts hearing whispers, her loving husband has become a stranger, and her baby daughter learns a chilling new word. Maybe Ana has unlocked the house’s secrets. Or maybe she’s becoming just a little unhinged herself.

Brandi Reeds’s Oak Avenue is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Ok story, terrible narration

I thought the story was, “Ok” But the end was...well without spoiling this short read, the end of the story was not that great. The narration was awful and it really ruined the story for me I think. Had I read it without listening, I probably would have given 4 stars to the story itself.

The performance ruined it for me

The story was ok (felt very cliche) but the narration was terrible. Distracted me from the story and several times I almost stopped altogether. Why do her make characters all sound ridiculous. She should have stuck to telling the story and not acting out the voices.

Can we talk about the narrator?

Absolutely awful, I thought it was a robot until she deepened her voice for the male lines. The story itself was lame, it had potential, but translated weak and pathetic, just like the protagonist.

Interesting Concept

Loved the book. It was interesting to see the characters evolve. I definitely wanted to find out what was going to happen in the end.

hmmm ...

at first i was thinking this story was a bit too American Horror Story: Murder House-esque, but as things unfolded and up to the very end, all i could think was ‘why is this stupid bitch not all out running away from this place with the baby’ ?!! just ridiculous

It’s the narration...

The story is good. The narration is decent except when the narrator tries to mimic a man’s voice. For some reason she slows her pronunciation down. The male voices sound perpetually sleepy or dim witted. It drove me crazy. I’ve really enjoyed all the new collections of stories on Prime reading but the narrator for this collection just irked me. I’m going to stop listening and just read the rest of this collection of stories.

Needs a better ending

I liked the story until the ending. It left too many unanswered questions. if the reason for leaving questions unanswered was to make the story scary/creepy/eerie...it didn't work...it was frustrating.

I didn't care for the narrator

I didn't make it far. The narrator did nothing for the story or characters. I put it down and will read it at another time.
