Nach der Sache mit Kirkland liegt Jackson Payne schwer verletzt im Krankenhaus, doch die Sache ist ausgestanden und er in Sicherheit. Frost nimmt den Auftrag an, doch sie hat nicht viel Hoffnung, den Jungen nach all der Zeit noch zu finden. Sie ahnt nicht, dass er der Schlüssel zu den mechanischen Kindern ist.

Der Mörder erweitert derweil das Spielfeld. Er hat eine ganz spezielle Geburtstagsüberraschung geplant...
