About this listen

It starts with a plane crash. There are survivors: a teenage girl and her little brother. They are running from something. But what? Then the men arrive. They are hunting the girl and boy. And...and that's all we can tell you....

A thrilling story of survival, hope and a love beyond all understanding, from the award-winning author of Satellite.

Ooh a bit different.

This was an interesting Audible choice, as I didn't know much about it when selecting it, only the author - who I tend to go for based on his excellent previous books - so the plane crash premise start felt conventional, with two young survivors.

But the plot doesn't want this to remain a simple survival-in-the-wild novel, this is science fiction. There are X-Files-esque bad guys, who are following the children. Why?

We have a chase/survival story that unravels itself into revealing the sci-fi heart of the plot, and without giving anything away, I will simply say that I really liked the interplay between the brother and sister, the fantastical elements of the pre-story and the quick movement towards civilisation and wrap-up.

I may have followed the back-and-forth time gaps better on paper, audio doesn't always lend itself easily to that, but I did enjoy the female narrator and the immediacy of her storytelling.

Not my favourite Lake, but definitely worth the time, and a good fast-moving cross-genre thriller.

With thanks to Nudge for providing a sample Audible copy.
