Les Contes d'Odessa décrivent un milieu très particulier : celui des bas-fonds du grand port de la mer noire où les Juifs formaient près d'un tiers de la population. Gangsters, charretiers, intermédiaires malhonnêtes du ghetto de la Moldavanka y sont évoqués avec truculence, humour et tendresse.

Dans d'autres textes, Babel a incorporé certains éléments de sa propre biographie, son enfance studieuse de petit garçon juif nourri du Talmud, gavé de lectures, son expérience tragique de la condition juive au cours des pogroms de 1905, l'éveil de sa vocation littéraire, confessions intimes faites avec un mélange de lyrisme et d'ironie. Victor Chklovski dira de Babel qu'il donna à la littérature russe, "grise comme un serin", "des culottes framboise et des bottines de cuir bleu azur."
