Summary

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills delivers a smart and sexy contemporary romance about a smoking-hot professional football player and the small-town girl he can’t resist.

We start off with a lie on Valentine’s Day.

My blind date isn’t the studious guy I expected: he’s a drop-dead gorgeous player with sinful amber eyes. Somehow we end up at his penthouse. I blame the gin and tonic.

The next day I learn he’s Jack Hawke - bad-boy professional quarterback with a murky past. The NDA he has me sign should be a warning that he isn’t a regular person. Please. I sign it Juliet Capulet, so goodbye, famous football player with abs of steel, and good luck tracking down this small-town librarian.

But Jack keeps showing up in places I least expect him. Just when I’m sure he’s gone, he waltzes into my community theater and wins the part of Romeo to my Juliet. How’s a plain, mostly innocent girl like me supposed to resist a man like him?

Is Jack my real Romeo...or will this gorgeous football player only break my heart?

4.5 stars - loved this story!

Adored this story so I award 5 long-breathy-make-out-kiss stars for it! A funny, gorgeous read. When Elena Riley's best friend sets her up on a blind date, she never expects him to be so freakin' gorgeous. She also never expects to end up back at his place, or to wake up to an empty bed, and a note that proves him to be a liar. However, that's not the last she'll see of him. Jack Hawke has trust issues and an NDA to protect his privacy. However, Elena is seeping beneath under his skin and making him throw caution to the wind. He definitely knows that one night is not enough for him but his fears may just damage something that could be amazing. I adored this story. Elena was a fab female lead. I loved that she walked her own path, yet didn't realise how magnetic and charismatic she was - the effect she had on other people. She was direct, sassy, and had some great verbal comebacks. Jack was misused and misunderstood. Under his gorgeous, hunky facade was a surprisingly sweet guy. I giggled and melted at his favourite things but thrilled at his dirty-talking mouth! These two had intense chemistry and were made for each! The kissing alone was so sexy! Another fabulous read from one of my faves! In terms of narration, I adore Savannah Peachwood's voice. She's really expressive, has fantastic timing and pacing, and does a great job with the male voices. I've never listened to Eric G Dove before but must admit that he didn't quite hit the spot for me in this particular story, which is why it's 4.5 stars overall for the audiobook, but because I love the story, I enjoyed the audio on the whole.

The male narrator is wretched

His female voice is offensively weak, more of a caricature of an annoying middle aged woman. it’s shocking he was chosen. Couldn’t even get past a chapter of his voice.

Adorable Story but....

I won’t go into the actual story, just know it’s a really cute sports romance that features a hot as hades misunderstood “bad boy” pro QB and a normal “everyday girl” heroine.....not to mention the support cast is like the second coming of Steel Magnolias.... My issue here is SOLELY with the narration. Savannah Peachwood does her thing, I adore her and she is about the only female narrator who can do a Southern twang accent without sounding ridiculous and overdoing it. However, the male narrator? I don’t know him so I took a chance....I couldn’t listen to his chapters. In fact, I listened to so little of this audible and yet I’m still chancing not being able to exchange it and getting back my credit just so others possibly skip it and don’t waste theirs. I’ve seen a review complaining about his female voice and I firmly agree, it’s INSANELY RIDICULOUS.....but I likely would’ve been able to get over it. No, his entire narration style was awful and didn’t fit Jack at all. Like, I know I complain that Sebastian York and Joe Arden are overused in popular books BUT I would’ve taken them over this guy and that’s saying something. I HATE to pick at someone for their craft, his voice isn’t bad, it’s just not the kind of male voice necessary for ROMANCE audiobooks. It is missing that.....that.....idk the “it” factor. Do yourself a favor, save the credit and just read the book.

Fun and Sexy Romance!

I originally read this book (see my review below), but when I saw that it was a read/listen now via Kindle Unlimited, I decided it was time for an audio reread. Savannah Peachwood was wonderful as Elena and I really enjoyed her performance. This is my first time listening to Eric G. Dove and though his performance was good, he didn't match Jack very well. This was still a good listen though and I recommend the audiobook. ***** Not My Romeo was a really fun and sexy romance. It starts off with a memorable meet cute and a case of mistaken identity and hooks readers right from the start. I loved the opposites attract chemistry between Jack and Elena. They pushed each other and helped the other bring out parts of themselves that were hidden away. I'm not generally a fan of instalove, but it worked for me in this book and I was rooting for these two to overcome and find their happily ever after. The secondary characters were a lot of fun (Daisy Lady Gang!) and I'm really hoping that Devon and Topher each get books. The pacing of the story was good, but I did find that it started to stall a bit halfway/towards the end. The misunderstandings and lack of communication became repetitive and I started to grow tired of all the back and forth. I also don't agree with all the decisions our characters made, but I understand the insecurities and fears that were driving them. The ending and epilogue were sweet and such a great way for the story to come full circle, but I wouldn't have minded a bit more groveling ;) CW: death of a parent, gun violence, and domestic abuse

Male narrator not the best for this genre

I don’t mean to write a negative review, but his voice did not fit the age of the character and his other character’s voices were not easy to listen to. I recommend the book, not the male narrator reading the book. Make sure to listen to sample of his works before purchasing this title.

Not Totally My Romeo

Ok, the story was about 3.5 stars for me, but I enjoy Ilsa’s writing a lot. She has a way with getting into a character which draws me in. I think the thing that was just irritating to me was the sister and the ex-boyfriend. I just really don’t like that how that relationship provided fuel for family discord. Yes, I know it’s a story, but when gossip runs rampant in a small town, you’d think their mom would not allow it. Wrong. Now to Jack and Elena. I loved their instant and hot chemistry. I really liked how Elena was just unabashed about it in the beginning. Jack was a weird thing for me. I understand his standoffishness, but at the same time, he would go all in on things. Talk about mixed signals. It was a frustrating thing, but that’s just how the story went. Overall a good book, but I do have to mention the narration. Savannah Peachwood is one of my favorites and really fit Elena well. Eric G. Dove is a new to me voice and while I didn’t think he fit Jack, I think he did the job okay. I was not a fan of his female voice and that would really throw me off with the audio.

Great story as usual!

Loved the story. Wasn’t thrilled with the male narrator. His voice didn’t match the character for me. He sounded too old. Savannah is my favorite she does a great job with all of her characters.

Male narrator didn't do it for me

I wanted to listen to this entire book, it had a great story line, but I couldn't make it past the male narrators chapter. maybe there is a shortage of narrators right now, but he was no where near the age of this character. I can't even finish the book

Fun and Flirty Romance!

Can you imagine walking into a blind date and seeing this man? Hellloooo Jack! This was a such a fun and flirty audiobook. The premise of the meet cute on Valentine’s Day of all days had me smiling and cringing at the same time. Blind dates feel so old fashioned to me and definitely can lead to some funny mistaken identities. But fate wasn’t going to let these two miss the perfect match for each other. Jack and Elena had some hot chemistry and funny banter giving me lots of laughs while listening. Along with the laughs there were some tender moments, just the right amount of angst for this small town romance with a dash of superstar football magic. “Let’s just say I know how to satisfy a woman, to have her crave me every moment we’re apart.” ‘I volunteer as tribute.’ I’m with Elena, I volunteer. I really loved Elena, she is not your typical librarian, hiding her inner sex kitten with the amazing lingerie she designs and sews herself beneath her buttoned up wardrobe. While Jack wasn’t in the market for another woman to complicate his life, finding a genuine and kind woman like Elena was just the spark he needed back in his life. I liked that even though Jack was a high profile athlete, he was pretty damn shy and had a tender side to him that was easy to fall in love with. Savannah and Eric’s narration definitely made this an enjoyable listen, a good book to put a smile on your face. Side Note - Some scenes just make me laugh out loud while listening- Elena contemplating putting lingerie on her pig for IG was one of them. “Well, maybe put some lingerie on him. Jammies for Hammies.”

Not My Romeo

This was a very enjoyable story - I love damaged heros and I was looking for a sports romance too. Jack was the perfect sexy broody QB and Elena is the opposites attract counter to all that. Their meet cute was great (mistaken identity on a blind date for her) a bit of drama to keep it moving along but not over the top. Great supporting characters too and I’ll be looking out for the series follow ups with them And I don’t have any issues with the narration. I know some others were not a fan but it was all good for me. I’ll listen to this pair again.
