'The literary phenomenon of the decade.'
Guardian
'A Tube stop-missing, escalator-reading tale.' Evening Standard
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.

Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.

'Tender and devastating.' Guardian
'A book to cancel plans for.' Grazia
'A classic coming-of-age love story. Vogue

This book will not be for everyone. If you are expecting a traditional love story or a plot filled with high drama and suspense, you may be disappointed.
It is eloquently written. Despite conjuring feelings or frustration and even despair, it does make you feel. It is a study of awkwardness, anxiety, self doubt and a deep, intoxicating love. It is possibly one of the most emotionally moving books I have ever read. It bought back memories of younger years and all the difficult feelings that went with it.
I have nothing in common with the characters or the author. In fact they are polar opposite to me, but it serves as proof that inside, we all feel the same. We have all been that confused, scared human, struggling to fit in.
I recommend this book whole heartedly, if you are prepared to embark on an emotionally painful but ultimately rewarding journey.

beautifully bleak

I have been hunting for the English version of this for ages. I had seen endless reviews of the TV show which I couldn’t see because I live in a country where it was not available so was excited to finally get my hands on the audio book - and it was so disappointing! A boring story of teenage sex….oh well. The delivery was, for me, also irritating: I can imagine male and female voices in my head when I read, I don’t need a woman to lower her voice for the male parts in an audio book, it’s just sounds ridiculous. Didn’t finish this one. Got about third of the way through and found a more interesting book.

Normal and boring

First of all the male narration was absolutely horrid. The story was good, but the ending was lacklustre to say the least.

Meh…
