About this listen

** Listen to the modern classic behind the Bafta-winning series. **

'The literary phenomenon of the decade.'
Guardian
'A Tube stop-missing, escalator-reading tale.' Evening Standard

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.

Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.

'Tender and devastating.' Guardian
'A book to cancel plans for.' Grazia
'A classic coming-of-age love story. Vogue

I loved the story and would love to hear more stories like this but it was ruined but the narrator. No soul or expression, male voice imitation was quite bad. This story needs a different narrative approach.

Great story, not so great narration

I felt like this book was made whole by its lack of glamour and the expectations of what the characters ought to be doing, it’s a great read

Normal scenes but well done

I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge fan of the TV series, it's probably my favourite thing I've had the pleasure of watching.

I've put off reading the book after mixed reviews in comparison to the series, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It's beautifully written, and the narration is immersive and really enjoyable. If you've watched the show, there's not a huge amount to gain from the book, but I enjoyed listening to it and will do so again.

Beautiful story, fantastic narration.

Very dull and immature book. There was no real story line just a series of uninteresting happenings. Almost like this was written in a way that someone read out their own diary yet nothing of any interest happened.

immature
